Mmmmm...Personally I think that Harris and Gambon were perfect for the version of Dumbledore they played. The first two books, Dumbledore is more like a laid back and eternally wise hippy. But as the Voldemort arc heats up, he gets more and more kick ass. So yeah, Gambon was a better kick ass Dumbledore, and much better at the "greatest wizard in the world" title.

I completely agree!

And it'snot like book!Dumbledore has never been nasty.

HBP and DH really made me think that Dumbledore has quite the nasty streak, given how he used both Harry and Snape. And then the scene in The Prince's Tale where he's just calmly telling Snape that Harry has to die and he's been protecthing him so he would die at the right moment....yeah...that kinda made him a less loveable in my eyes.

I always thought he was a manipulative bastard who brainwashed little kids, seriously abused his power, didn't live up to his own moral standards, and generally had a lot more in common with Voldemort than any of his minions was willing to admit. I also love him to bits; he's easily one of my favourite characters. I guess I just prefer magnificent bastards to grnadfatherly headmasters, but I then ymmv. :D

Oh, I'm a magnificent bastard fan myself. (I am a huge Snapefen) I like Dumbledore, I just can't see him as kindly or benevolent anymore after DH. And I think you're right, he had alot more in common with Voldemort then not in common with him.

I rather agree with the interpretation, but I thought it made more of an impact on the internal squickometers if he appeared to be the gentle, kind grandfather. More of a jarring sensation when you find out what he's really like. Gambon doesn't come across as a whimsical grandfather to me, and that frontis what made Dumbles' manipulations work.

[identity profile] mistress-siana.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, good point. I think this might be an inherent problem of the movies, since we actually get to see the characters with our own eyes and not just Harry's interpretation of them. We never see the real Dumbledore, the real Snape, or the real Draco, but the movies can't do that. In the books, we can take Harry's thoughts at face value, or we can pick up on all the little hints here and there that his PoV may be biased. For example, we learn that James and Lily had come to mistrust Dumbledore for some reason, and we only find out why at the end of the last book. I don't think Harry ever fully understood the extend to which he was being manipulated, so we don't actually get this jarring moment of insight. So maybe it's good that the audience doesn't see the same Dumbledore that Harry appears to be seeing? I don't know... good point, really.

Love your icon, by the way.

That's a good point.
