If I'm not completely off the mark, the context is that she's of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, instead of directly African descent, and people may think that doesn't make her "black."

Despite the fact that even if we're going with "only Africans are black," a good portion of the Dominican people have some African ancestry.

Though I don't think the KKK is a good resource for calling anyone anything.

There's wank about this? Ugh, why am I surprised. I have no idea why this society is so opposed to letting people identify themselves (racially, gender-wise, sexually, whatever) how they choose to. If someone identifies as black, then respect that. If someone thinks they're a Na'vi (oh yeah, that's out there), it's weird, sure, but it's not affecting your life. Stop drinking haterade, people.

I have to say, this is by far the most annoying part of the community, all this blah blah blah over who is and isn't black. There's what you call yourself, and then what you know other people are projecting on you, and it's all become one more thing to fight over.

Oh god. Not this again. I swear, I have no idea what people are talking about with this. She calls herself black and is clearly not green or purple or something and in fact does have skin significantly darker than the average 'white' person (including those who have Mediteranian ancestors).

Now, if she wants to call herself Blue, I may start arguing the point.



And if the comments above that say this is mostly to do with some kind of Black=African American thing then wtf are all the black people who aren't American or have to arrive at their family's new country directly from Africa? What about the black people here in the UK? A lot of them came via the Caribbean! I guess they're some other colour from the crayon box yet to be asigned a racial group.

And whilst we're at it, the white skin colour came from the European region so does that mean anyone who isn't European but has 'white' skin can't call themselves white? Oh bugger.


Seriously, let the woman call herself whatever she wants to and go with it, especially if it patently fits.


And if we're going to judge things by KKK standards I might be Jewish. I'm not sure as I don't keep up with KKK policy.
