If I'm not completely off the mark, the context is that she's of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, instead of directly African descent, and people may think that doesn't make her "black."

Despite the fact that even if we're going with "only Africans are black," a good portion of the Dominican people have some African ancestry.

Though I don't think the KKK is a good resource for calling anyone anything.

I'm still a little confused. I mean, I know she's not African-American (so maybe she's not 'Black' in the American, politicised way), but I thought that 'black' was relatively straightforward

I'm not really sure, to be honest, but according to Wiki it depends on the definition. I know that here in the States, like you say, black pretty much exclusively means of African descent. I'm guessing that's where the wank comes from, and most probably from the Star Trek section of fandom, considering that Uhura is supposed to have grown up in Africa.

This is all speculation, though.

Though with a little more digging, because I'm curious, apparently when she goes to the Dominican Republic, she's asked if she considers herself American or Dominican, and she will reply that she's a black woman. They will reply that no, she's a "trigueñita, light brown," which makes her angry. So it's non-fandom wank as well.

Thanks. Where I'm from, the vast majority of the Black population are first or (young) second generation African or Brazilian immigrants, so the politics of race and racial identity are different.
