THIS.

[identity profile] klutzy-girl.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree so hard. I tried to watch the British version of The Office, and I couldn't even get through five minutes of it.

American Office FTW. I love everything about it, still.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both versions, but somehow the American cast seems so much better to me. I think they just come across as both more endearing and funnier.

[identity profile] greeneyedlady.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I may be an even worse offender in that I love the US version to bits and have never even seen one episode of the UK original... nor do I have any strong desire to.

[identity profile] miss-jaffacake.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm British and pretty much hated the UK version of the show. The only bits I liked were the Tim/Dawn relationship and the taunting of Gareth. The US show still had those dynamics but much more on top.

[identity profile] periariyx.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the UK version didn't really work for me.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I get that the US version is a spawn of the UK version, but I don't really see the point in saying ~OMG THIS ONE IS BETTER~
They're not really the same thing: The UK office had a tight story arc and almost felt more like a move, vs. the US Office which has always felt like a long-running television show with open-ended plots.
I feel like it's easier to say the US version is better because more has been developed, there's more to grow attached to (seeing as the UK version has 14 episodes vs. the 100+ of the US version)

I prefer the British version but I certainly won't criticize others for liking the American. Whatever floats your boat, duder.

[identity profile] smirnoffmule.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the two are quite different shows, to be honest, with different aims, so it's no surprise if the American one appeals to some people who didn't like the British version. That said, the British show was innovative and influential and made a huge splash in the genre in the way the American show didn't (and really by definition can't, since it's remake) and I think it would be wrong to be dismissive of that, whatever your personal viewing preference.

I vastly prefer the British version, FWIW. The US version just feels like another run of the mill American sitcom to me. The UK version makes me cringe and want to hide behind my hands at times, but it's supposed to, and that's a testiment to how effective it is.

I liked the UK version before the US one existed, but I think the US one is better. Since it's so much longer it has some rougher patches, but the characters are better-written with better chemistry and it eases up on the depressing aspects just enough to keep the flavor without the ceaseless (largely unfunny) dourness. Even at just over a dozen eps, the UK version was at times hard for me to watch.

[identity profile] cpuff94.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree. the british version is so...bland

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not "blantantly true". It is YOUR OPINION. You have no more right to state otherwise than the people you're complaining about.

Oh and I disagree with you - the original is far superior IN MY OPINION.

THIS. I'm British, watched the UK version, hated it, and caught a little bit of the US version one day and was hooked.

They're completely different shows in tone and execution and I vastly prefer the US version.

Normally I love EVERYTHING British better, but I have to have love for the American one because, you know, there's more of it. There are only fourteen episodes of the UK one. C'mon. That's barely a show. It was brilliant and a great jumping-off point, but it didn't have time to get as awesome as it could have, I think.

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude I couldn't stand the British version. I turned it off after suffering through three episodes. I think it was because they were all assholes with no redeeming qualities.

Also agreeing. I liked the original okay though.

I don't think it's blatantly true in this case. I like them both, but they're like apples and oranges. I think the UK show does what it's doing better a lot of the time, but I don't consider the US version a crappy remake of a British show.

[identity profile] scarletumbrella.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I vehemently disagree, but enjoy your use of the word "temerity." A++

[identity profile] pack-ofsmokes.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ha no it's not blatently true it's just an opinion. I haven't seen the UK version in years and I tried to watch the US version but it wasn't for me. Well to be honest I think Extras is a lot better imho.

[identity profile] phaetonschariot.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Are you new? Actually The Office is one of the few exceptions to that rule - I've heard a hell of a lot of people say this. The only show where the US version is more well-regarded than The Office is QAF, as far as I've seen.

You know, I really think you could at least have made an argument for this for the first couple of seasons.

However, after season three, the American Office has becoming soooooooooooooooooooooo full of fail, that there's no comparing the two anymore. The British one was brilliant and knew when to stop when it was still brilliant, and the American one is running itself into the ground...

I mean, I've given up the show entirely at this point, but the last time I read a general "TV spoilers" article, I heard **spoiler** Pam is going to force herself to stay at work while she's in labor so that she can get insurance is going pay for an extra day in the hospital. Daniel's claims there going to have Dunder Mifflin daycare...This show is now a cheezy ass sitcom without the laugh track.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to think opinions are something that can be "blatantly true" and you like the American "The Office".

Given the lack of understanding of the former, the latter isn't very surprising.
