as someone who's played the game since it came out, i can tell you that by and large there IS no team to let down. sometimes you'll wind up on a server where everyone is awesome, but most of the time it's a bunch of screaming clan kids obsessed with their KDR and their ranking despite never ever leaving the server their clan owns. i have fun with the game, and despite a multitude of stories involving immature brats, some with admin powers, i generally have a good time, but 90% of the time, "team" fortress is a misnomer. i can't tell you how many times i've wound up deep in enemy territory with a shotgun in one hand and my dick in the other, watching my ammo count steadily bleed away as i fend off the slavering hordes of blue team bastards vaulting over their teammates' corpses to get to me, waiting for the backup that never comes because red team is holding hands and giggling in our base.

[identity profile] haku23.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I found your descriptions hilarious :'D Which is bad because had it been me in that situation I would have been fuckin' raging so hard since gaemz is srs biznis and all ha ha. The idea of someone with a necklace of ears just amuses me, what can I say?

[identity profile] morrienymph.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same anxiety. You are not alone.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
and then occasionally you wind up on a server where there is one awesome guy who saves the round in the last minute, showing up out of nowhere and kicking down some random door all mr. t style, wearing a necklace of like 6 or 7 blue team ears, and he covers you while you grab the case and get out in an epic escape that involves killing everyone twice and bathing in a shower of blood and you haven't even gotten out of blue base yet.

[identity profile] noetma.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently got into TF2 (recent as in, got it for christmas) and that I know that anxiety. But don't take anything too seriously ( tf2 is like... the least serious business fps) and for the love of valve, start playing pyro. You can be lagging, half blind and made of all thumbs like me and still be kind of sort of passingly useful as a pyro.

cheers!

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Man I would so not recommend the pyro thing.

That's like putting a giant sign on your back that says I DO NOT KNOW WHAT I AM DOING. PLEASE TARGET ME.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
sure if you're a sucky pyro. but once you get the hang of the game, and start working out how most players tend to behave in a given situation, you can exploit that shit for all it's worth. i love jumping into a crowd of blue team and spinning around with mouse1 held down, they invariably start freaking out because they have a hard time tracking me, and then i run away. if i'm lucky, i get out alive; if i'm not, i still take down 3-4 guys with me.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm at a middle point between being sucky and getting the hang of it, but YES that is so goddamn fun. ...when it actually works that is.

pyro is a great class to play just to be a dick. if you have the PC version, do yourself a favour and grind at the achievements until you get the backburner if you haven't already; while the axetinguisher is only passingly more useful than the default (it's a melee weapon for god's sakes) and the flaregun is basically worthless in 95% of situations, the backburner has basically no downside.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know how people can live without compression blast.

I don't know how people's teams don't initiate friendly fire votes without compression blast.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
compression blast just doesn't come in handy much, at least not for me. i'm usually all by myself and too busy to save someone burning, and the only time i ever use it for combative purpouses is on for example lumberyard or any incarnation of well, because on a busy well server there's the occasional opportunity to push someone in the path of an oncoming train (and then get banned due to butthurt.)

This! How anyone can roll as Pyro without compression?

Pushing people in front of trains!
Putting out flaming Medics!
Rocket-jumping!
Throwing enemy stickybombs back in their faces!
Juggling ubers!
Reflected crockets!
Huntsman headshots!

It's like a swiss army knife of fun and ragequit.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I was horribly worried about this too, anon! Especially because I decided that I wanted to play Medic a lot (mandatory teamwork unless you're horrible). Unfortunately a lot of it is like what the first person who commented described - many times, people are more concerned about being on the top of the scoreboard than they are about actually completing the objective, but sometimes you get lucky enough to end up on an amazing team that works together beautifully.

The best thing I can think of is, if you have friends who have the game, try playing with them so that you can get a feel for it. This is especially useful if you don't know how your computer will run it (Mine was horrible, and it was embarrassing until I appropriately changed some settings), or if you're dicking around with settings (MOUSE SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENT IS YOUR FRIEND!).

Everyone has to start somewhere, and soon you'll be going from being glued to a Heavy and getting backstabbed or shot in the head or set on fire all the time to a badass healing/killing machine that says "YO FUCK YOUR BULLETS" and syringes the everloving shit out of your enemies.

Or, you know, the other classes' equivalents.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
practice makes perfect, after all. i'll never understand people who insist they suck at FPS and won't play an FPS because of it. you suck at FPS BECAUSE YOU NEVER PLAY. why is that so hard for some people to understand?

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Some of us just have really terrible aim no matter how long we try at it. :-(

Same boat as you OP, though now I'm getting (slowly) more confident about the game. Just avoid the really dicky servers, you can usually tell which ones to avoid after a little while. Sometimes it's good to spectate for a while just so you can get a feel of the maps and gameplay too, that has helped me a bit.

also, try and play as all the classes for a while, until you get a hang of the game. i'm still pretty new but just observing what team mates and enemies are doing and emulating them gives you new strategies to try and get better with.

[identity profile] thickets.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Same here -- well, actually I haven't bought the game yet, because I hate multiplayers for exactly this reason. I don't really like interacting with other players ... but I really want to play it! I was just talking about it in my LJ the other day. I think I'm going to buy it though.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
just buy it, it's cheap, it's fun, and as long as you don't let pub tards or things not going well get to you, it's the best multiplayer experience since the original doom.

[identity profile] trustigious.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
If you're on PC you can always create your own server and use the console to add in some bots. They're pretty terrible but you can get the hang of the classes (except maybe the Spy because the bots are psychic) without the worry of "letting your team down". :)

But if you're playing on a console, just go for it!

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
your icon frightens me, so i had to reup one of my old ones to counter it.

[identity profile] kahtiihma.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Give it a try. Average life is 30 seconds anyway and no one notices if you explode a lot because they explode a lot too.

Perhaps try a less-serious server to get the hang of it first?

[identity profile] vaultedthewall.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW YOUR FEELING, OP. I've had my copy for more than a month. My roommate bought me a mic/headset for christmas. I've still just been reading "HERE'S HOW TO NOT BE A DICK WHILE PLAYING." type tutorials religiously and letting my social anxiety get the better of me.

But- a lot of these comments have been really encouraging. I hope they are encouraging for you too, OP. We can learn how to be a credit to the team together. \m/

[identity profile] piratecore.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hey don't worry about it! Just try to get in there and have some fun. Sure there are people who are rude, but they're that way to people who suck AND people who are better than them. Don't let it get to you!

[identity profile] foofighter0234.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Just practice, OP. Don't be scared of letting your team down.
