We had to give speeches for class recently, and one of my classmates did his on "why video games are bad". He started a tirade about how they were all mindlessly violent, encouraged people to do bad things, required no real thought, and had no interesting plotlines. The last line of his speech was "so if you want to end up rotting your brain and becoming a worthless person, go out and buy a video game".
:/

I once did a speech in my communications applications class about how Final Fantasy games had great stories, and were interactive too. So I think that that person is a moron who has obviously never played a good videogame.

Yeah - I knew him already, so I wasn't exactly surprised at him. The annoying part was that, unlike the other people who argued things like that, he actually agreed with his position, rather than taking it up for the sake of challenging themselves to do a good speech on it (one kid did a speech about why slavery was good).

one kid did a speech about why slavery was good

That's just really, really sad OTL (I don't think any of my teachers would have even allowed someone to make a speech like that)

[identity profile] and-sparks-fly.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I mean he didn't agree with the point, he was just doing it as an exercise to see if he could argue it convincingly... although his speech kind of sucked

[identity profile] andromeda-2.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, OK. I read it as he actually thought slavery was good. Comprehending fail on my part OTL

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that would have pissed me off so much. I probably would have ended up getting kicked out of the class, but I would have stood up and said, "Okay, I'm going to put the skills I obtained from the Ace Attorney video game series to good use here. OBJECTION!" complete with dramatic finger-point.

Or I would have asked the teacher if I could do on an impromptu speech in rebuttal to his instead, completely trashing my original topic. :/

But I have to say, that would have angered me considerably less than some of the speech topics I had to listen to throughout high school. Not once, but twice (two years in a row, in fact) I had to listen to Bible-beating boys give speeches on why homosexuality was "wrong" -- and they completely believed it, too. To this day I still have no idea why they were permitted to give such hateful speeches. I really don't. >

"...I would have asked the teacher if I could do on an impromptu speech in rebuttal to his instead"

THIS! I'm sure he had no sources, either!

W-would you mind if I snatched that icon of yours? I'd credit you... :)

Ofcourse! Best icon ever, right? XD

I'd have rewritten mine on the fly to talk about how videogames increase coordination, open up possibilities for depth one cannot completely do with mere movies, and the complex character development and plots in many of them.

Well, I'd want to. Instead I just did a Humanities essay on it.

[identity profile] and-sparks-fly.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
So would I, if I hadn't already given mine.

Which cult does your classmate belong to? Because that whole diatribe fairly S C R E A M S of church lit rants/tirades that I've read from ex-Worldwide Church of God groups.....
