We had to give speeches for class recently, and one of my classmates did his on "why video games are bad". He started a tirade about how they were all mindlessly violent, encouraged people to do bad things, required no real thought, and had no interesting plotlines. The last line of his speech was "so if you want to end up rotting your brain and becoming a worthless person, go out and buy a video game".
:/

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I once did a speech in my communications applications class about how Final Fantasy games had great stories, and were interactive too. So I think that that person is a moron who has obviously never played a good videogame.

Ugh, that would have pissed me off so much. I probably would have ended up getting kicked out of the class, but I would have stood up and said, "Okay, I'm going to put the skills I obtained from the Ace Attorney video game series to good use here. OBJECTION!" complete with dramatic finger-point.

Or I would have asked the teacher if I could do on an impromptu speech in rebuttal to his instead, completely trashing my original topic. :/

But I have to say, that would have angered me considerably less than some of the speech topics I had to listen to throughout high school. Not once, but twice (two years in a row, in fact) I had to listen to Bible-beating boys give speeches on why homosexuality was "wrong" -- and they completely believed it, too. To this day I still have no idea why they were permitted to give such hateful speeches. I really don't. >

I'd have rewritten mine on the fly to talk about how videogames increase coordination, open up possibilities for depth one cannot completely do with mere movies, and the complex character development and plots in many of them.

Well, I'd want to. Instead I just did a Humanities essay on it.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Which cult does your classmate belong to? Because that whole diatribe fairly S C R E A M S of church lit rants/tirades that I've read from ex-Worldwide Church of God groups.....

[identity profile] creatore-magico.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Here here, I couldn't have said it better. Whenever I feel like I'm loosing the magic, all I need to do is play these games or listen to the music, or even just imagine them, and I'm back in a world I can live in again.

[identity profile] andromeda-2.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed so much, OP. While the Zelda games weren't the main influence to my creativity and imagination, they were definitively a big part of it. Much love for them&hearts

[identity profile] bandnerd88.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed SO MUCH. Not just with Miyamoto's games, but with most games. idk, I think there is just kind of a magic to interacting with another world, rather than just passively watching it/reading it. (Not that I'm bagging on cartoons/movies/books/etc - I'm in all kinds of fandoms, and I love to read. But there's just something different about video games.)

[identity profile] patsch.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't agree more, and let me join you in your thank you to Miyamoto and Nintendo. I must have started playing those games about 15 years ago, and they were a huge part of my childhood and my childhood imagination. I still adore them, play the new ones and get the old ones out regularly.

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! These games got me through some rough times, and now fanart and fic for them takes up most of my fandom life these days. They're brilliant, inspiring, amazing, and I LOVE them <3

[identity profile] chassysaweirdo.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I first read that as These games are so mean to me

and I was like D: Why?

but then I reread it and agree so much :c

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You go, OP! I absolutely ADORE Zelda, and while it's not my favorite game series ever (the Tales of series wins my heart here, or maybe even Pokemon) I still love it to pieces and I will join you in your thanking of Nintendo and Miyamoto. After all, the Zelda series has left such an epic, Triforce-shaped mark on the video game world; it's impossible (at least for me) to think of video games without thinking of Zelda.

Also, screw all those video game haters. I think a lot of people just hate on video games because they're a new media. After all, once upon a time, there were people who hated movies and thought movies were made by Satan, but look where those are now. Haters to the left, video games will live on. <3

(I feel like this comment was really incoherent, so suffice it to say that I agree with everything this secret said. <3)

[identity profile] canthari.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought a good videogame will captivate your imagination, doesn't matter the genre or if it has the best graphics, your head will do the rest.

[identity profile] cantfindreverse.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! I fell in love with Ocarina of Time when I was a little kid, and that bit of magic has never gone away.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Video games have done more for my imagination than any other medium. A book or a movie, it's all done and you're just reading/watching it. But a video game lets you LIVE it.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the haters? People who don't play videogames. That's like criticizing books when you're illiterate. I either ignore or argue with them.

[identity profile] lyrica.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
A-FUCKING-MEN SISTER/BROTHER

i still hold Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask near and dear to my heart because they had such beautiful stories (and music! and visuals and you get the idea) that engrossed me to the point where i felt like i was the one living the adventure. seriously, anyone who argues that video games rot people's minds obviously have a limited scope of experience

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
AMEN, ANON! I may not have had much opportunity to play Zelda game (lol, too distracted by Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts x3), but those who say games are stupid haven't played any. *cough*DAD*cough*

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. SO HARD. Ironically I've been playing OOT and the other Zeldas a lot lately! I love the series soooo much. Video games do carry messages in them, but it's the players' choice whether or not to listen. As for Zelda, I think it has almost nothing but good messages. Heck, in Majora's Mask, you have to help tons of people to get anywhere.

I think the statement "Video games aren't art" is horribly close-minded. It's true some creators of games don't consider them art either, but I don't think they're giving themselves enough credit. Storylines, world-building, character interaction, concept and final art (the word itself!): all of that requires a huge amount of time and effort to make any good. And like paintings and aspects in novels and so forth, a lot of aspects can be left to interpretation in video games. Thinking video games aren't art just because video games are more interactive than other forms of it just seems absurd.

[identity profile] eralkfang.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
God only knows how I would have turned out if it wasn't for Ocarina of Time. The Legend of Zelda has inspired me ever since I was a little freak. Video games can be art; expand your horizons. <3

[identity profile] mythc-writer.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I love you anon. You got a point there. Too many people are too willing to point the finger at everyone and everything--the games, the TV, the music--except at the freaking parents. Legend of Zelda is a beautiful game series, it emmerses you in it's world so easily. It gives me constant inspiration for writing and just for the wonderment of life. it helped me when I was alone and upset in middle school, and led me to my ultimate joy of writing stories. So SPEAK IT SISTAH/BROTHER.

[identity profile] looneymoon.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of want to write my thesis on this very issue, but I'm afraid I'd get ridiculed out of my university if I do D:

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
fucking YES YES YES ♥

Ocarina of Time WAS my childhood. But even if it wasn't, fuck the haters. The only people who say shit like that are people who don't play.
