Yeah, I have a lot of problems with his comments. I think he's a good example of the liberal whiteish male (like Whedon) who does try hard to be progressive, and definitely thinks women can be totally awesome and strong (as long as they're hot to men). But I also think that that view can't divorce women from sex and how they must relate to men in some way. ie Real lesbians, not attractive to men, would terrify the fuck out of them because they don't exist within that paradigm. (Fantasy sexy evil or girly lesbians are fine!) I think these liberal males also like the idea of the strong woman (possibly because it turns them on, LOL, the Amazon archetype is a typical male fantasy) because it relieves them of male guilt, and frees them of responsibility for their actions (men are just big dumb goofy boys-who-will-be-boys, women are the grown up powerful sensible ones). That's what I didn't like about SitL/FotD (oh River Song!), and what I saw the other day, the male-penned Party Animals. Which ever way you look at it, it still essentialises gender roles, and heteronormativity (queers are kind of a bonus lulzy quirky extra that make you look progressive for including them). And the essentialised gender roles still think that ultimately women are squidgy and soft underneath, and men are grrrrr love beasts underneath, and River Song ends up feminised and dead with two imaginary children and that's her ideal ending.
