I'm really trying hard to see the sexism in his Doctor Who episodes, but I keep getting crushed by Russell T. Davies' driving need to make depict every companion's mother as utterly unlikeable.

Are you referring to Coupling as a source of his sexism?

OMG OP HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT AND TARNISH TEH MOFF?

Are you implying it somehow matters that he thinks women are "needy" and can't live without men; and that being a middle class man is SO HARD[1] (http://news.scotsman.com/doctorwho/Time-Lad-scores-with-sex.2535185.jp).

Or that, as he said in his interview in DW Magazine #385, that it's perfectly natural for men to commit adultery ("have you met a man?").

Or, indeed, that character development is completely unnecessary (in the same article as [1]).

Or that Rose is a "clingy girlfriend" (SDCC panel) whereas the Doctor, who attempted suicide at least once after losing Rose, clearly doesn't have any such problems. Of course, if I start talking about how his episodes could be interpreted, I'd be here a while, and while normally I might relish the opportunity, I don't have the time at the moment.

True, maybe he is no worse than 90% of TV out there and it's not like RTD is some magic sparkly angel of feminism, but most of them don't do interviews where they whine about how tough being a middle-class man is.

I'm more familiar with Moffat through Coupling (I'd have to check which DWs were his so I won't bother), and while that definitely played into the "men are dumb" stereotype, it certainly treated women as equally foolish if in different ways.

He does write a good episode though.

But i do hate him for writing 'TEC/The Doctor Dances' which was all about the Doctor having sex. NO MOFFAT NO. DOCTOR + SEX = NO
(unless it's with the Master. or like a Time Lord. *such a hypocrite* cos the doctor having sex with a human is like, having sex with another species, so it's essentially bestiality. kinda. EW.)

But i do not like how he writes women generally.

I agree mostly.

To be fair though, even though he comes off as an absolute sexist dick in interviews, I can't see much sexism in his episodes (it's more the characterisation of Ten and the companions that bugs me - but that won't be much of a problem when he has his own characters).

It's easy not to notice any sexism if you don't read his interviews tbh.

Oh, F!S, how you open my eyes a little more each day.

I hadn't been aware he was so sexist. That's a little worrying. I had always been a little leery of his episodes just because of the heavy-handed way he introduced romance into the show (in every single freakin' episode, if I'm not mistaken), but all that blatant sexism is just. Blech. I dunno, I dunno.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, anon.

Moffat is easily at the top of my list of reasons I won't be watching once he takes over. Sexism doesn't attract me - no matter how pretty Eleven is.

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
lol @ the "zomg troll!" comments. I am truly disgusted/offended by his sexist remarks (all little girls will want to be Amy and all the boys will want them to be Amy!!), but as we all know, fandom only cares about misogyny when it suits them. He is obviously not across the board sexist (see: some of his female characters), but remarks such as those mentioned above really piss me off.

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand I want to agree but I hope a lot of the sexist/arsehole stuff that he said was years ago and not relevant to his opinion anymore. Or he was just deliberately trying to get a reaction.

On the other hand...Moff hasn't written an ending that involves giving a girl a CLONE and calling it a happy ending.

Also I do find the squee for Moff a little annoying, especially all the "yay I can start watching again!" comments. Look, I'm sure he's going to do stuff as head writer that we'll all find shit and complain about. It just annoys me that people tend to forget there are some good RTD moments, they just got less frequent as the series went on. But yeah, he's not evil incarnate and Moff isn't going to save us from all the wank. I'm sure the fandom will continue wanking when series 5 airs. We're a pro fandom when it comes to wank, we can't stop now!

I don't know, having read it, I had a though that maybe this interview people are quoting wasn't intended as seriously as people seem to think? Kind of seemed more in tone with Coupling than heavy-handed truthiness.

But I'm honestly just speculating, he probably is a giant sexist douche. Which is really sad. But at least I've never noticed anything sexist in his DW episodes, so I'm going to keep watching and hope to hell that it stays that way.

I don't read most interviews with the writers/producers of shows. I just don't care. What I do know is that from what I've seen Moff writes female characters light years better than RTD.

And I hate people who say that they're going to stop watching because Moff is sexist. Simply because it implies that it was okay to watch RTD despite the racism and heteronomative writing.

Look, I'm not going to claim that the guy doesn't have gender issues, but it doesn't leak into his writing that much and frankly he can't be much worse about it than RTD, who in addition to being a really shitty writer in general created not one, not two, but three female characters cast from the exact same 'escape from your henpecking mother and fall head over heels in love with your rescuer' mold.

(Yes, he averted it with Donna but. Narrowly. So narrowly that he felt obligated to turn it into a running joke)

That's not to say that I don't think all three were awesome, but really, RTD? Really?

Eh, people have said it already but I'll throw my two cents in anyway:

Yes, Moffat comes off as really sexist in a lot of interviews (which is why I make a habit of not reading interviews) and I really doubt I'd like the man if I spent any time with him IRL.

On the other hand, this doesn't tend to bleed into his (Doctor Who) writing (I haven't seen any of his non-Who writing) to a distracting degree. (Certainly less than RTD, who makes me cringe, but that is derailing, we're not talking about RTD, I'm sorry and I'll stop now.)

It's entirely possible that once he's writing/overseeing entire seasons instead of just sporadic episodes, his issues will bleed into his writing much more and he'll make me cringe as much as RTD does. It's also entirely possible that they won't and he will keep his issues off the screen and in interviews.

I don't have to like the guy to be excited about what he's going to write, particularly since he's created a number of female characters I liked, he's written several episodes I liked, and he has an approach to time travel in Doctor Who narratives that I wish more DW writers would take advantage of.

...have an Amy icon.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, most of the people who agree with you have already left the fandom. So, you're left with the people who don't think he's sexist. Better luck next showrunner!

Yeah, I have a lot of problems with his comments. I think he's a good example of the liberal whiteish male (like Whedon) who does try hard to be progressive, and definitely thinks women can be totally awesome and strong (as long as they're hot to men). But I also think that that view can't divorce women from sex and how they must relate to men in some way. ie Real lesbians, not attractive to men, would terrify the fuck out of them because they don't exist within that paradigm. (Fantasy sexy evil or girly lesbians are fine!) I think these liberal males also like the idea of the strong woman (possibly because it turns them on, LOL, the Amazon archetype is a typical male fantasy) because it relieves them of male guilt, and frees them of responsibility for their actions (men are just big dumb goofy boys-who-will-be-boys, women are the grown up powerful sensible ones). That's what I didn't like about SitL/FotD (oh River Song!), and what I saw the other day, the male-penned Party Animals. Which ever way you look at it, it still essentialises gender roles, and heteronormativity (queers are kind of a bonus lulzy quirky extra that make you look progressive for including them). And the essentialised gender roles still think that ultimately women are squidgy and soft underneath, and men are grrrrr love beasts underneath, and River Song ends up feminised and dead with two imaginary children and that's her ideal ending.
