OMG OP HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT AND TARNISH TEH MOFF?

Are you implying it somehow matters that he thinks women are "needy" and can't live without men; and that being a middle class man is SO HARD[1] (http://news.scotsman.com/doctorwho/Time-Lad-scores-with-sex.2535185.jp).

Or that, as he said in his interview in DW Magazine #385, that it's perfectly natural for men to commit adultery ("have you met a man?").

Or, indeed, that character development is completely unnecessary (in the same article as [1]).

Or that Rose is a "clingy girlfriend" (SDCC panel) whereas the Doctor, who attempted suicide at least once after losing Rose, clearly doesn't have any such problems. Of course, if I start talking about how his episodes could be interpreted, I'd be here a while, and while normally I might relish the opportunity, I don't have the time at the moment.

True, maybe he is no worse than 90% of TV out there and it's not like RTD is some magic sparkly angel of feminism, but most of them don't do interviews where they whine about how tough being a middle-class man is.

...this makes me horribly depressed, because I was looking forward to seeing 11 and now I'm very much dismayed by this display of sexism from the head writer.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Plenty of people see the interviews and can still enjoy the episodes, so you might find you like it.

I can't achieve that disconnect and I don't want to. And what's more, having read these interview quotes, every time I watch a Moffat episode I end up re-evaluating everything. I recognise part of this is my issue, but I don't want to make myself like it, so I don't care.

[identity profile] eternalwings.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You do realise writers can write things that aren't their own opinions? Just because he's supposedly sexist does not mean the Doctor is going to be wandering round telling Amy to put an apron on and get back in the kitchen ffs.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes I do.

But a) in knowing his opinions, I can't help but notice more and more how problematic his work is. Given the way he's written the episodes he's already done, I think it does show.

And b) I... don't want to. I'm not marching on the BBC demanding he be hung drawn and quartered but I'm sticking to my opinion that people who say that sort of thing shouldn't be encouraged and not turning in or buying any merch.

[identity profile] eternalwings.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Except I have seen the episodes he's written and I don't see the problem, in fact in all of the episodes they seem to have a strong female character so I really don't understand it.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but you don't see a problem with the stuff he said in that interview, so you're too stupid for your comments on sexism to be considered of any worth.

[identity profile] eternalwings.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Except what he thinks =/= he writes, there isn't a problem with his episodes. In fact in all of them it's women who save the fucking day so I'd like to see how you pick up his sexist views in that.

[identity profile] thickets.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that's just rude. :/ That's exactly the same sort of condescending bullshit I find offensive in Moffat's quotes, so congratulations on being a hypocrite, shitface.

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, was that really necessary?

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see his female characters as particularly strong. Reinette basically spent her whole life pining for the Doctor (of course, supposedly that's not all she did, but that's all we really see in the episode). River Song ended up in an afterlife where she wasn't a successful archaeologist or anything like that, but a mother to two fake kids. Sally Sparrow saw herself marrying Shipman two minutes after she first met him.

I'm not saying all this is horribly sexist or anything like that, but to me it's hardly an example of strong female characters.

[identity profile] eternalwings.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Reinette was willing to sacrifice herself for the entire court, River song actually sacrificed herself for the Doctor and the rest of the people in the VR and Sally Sparrow saved the TARDIS all on her own.

I don't see it as sexist and I really can't see how it could be, nor could I see how they were weak. In fact it's definitly a theme in DW with women saving the universe on a regular basis not just the Doctor.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't see what a woman sacrificing herself (especially if it's for the man she loves) has to do with being a strong character. But I guess everyone has their own definition of a "strong female character", and since ours are obviously very different, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Well yeah, I don't expect everyone to see it the same. I mean, I could go into detail about it if you really want that (although given that I'm really not supposed to be on LJ because I've got exams soon if you did want that, I'd probably link you to a post from my LJ that I keep handy because I recognised a while ago I talk a lot about this sort of thing and I don't always have the time to do so!) but I'm pretty sure you're not going to change my mind and I don't know if I'm going to change yours so the whole thing might be a bit futile!

(Seriously, normally I'd be leaving you a never ending comment about now, but exam in two days!)

[identity profile] kiwi-from-hell.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
♥ you. Excellent comment.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
XD Thank you! *Takes a bow* ;-)

I'm on a study break from my exams, in case you couldn't tell by the whole citing-sources crazy I've got going on.

[identity profile] hifive24.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe! I was quite impressed by your source-citing (as well as your comment :D)

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Those comments are full of fail but I feel bad now because I agree with him that Rose is a "clingy girlfriend".

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This is only problematic if you don't agree that the Doctor is also a clingy boyfriend. Cos who fell into little bits after Doomsday and emoed around for an entire season and who crossed dimensions and kicked ass to get what she wanted? IJS. Rose is just a tad bit more proactive there.

[identity profile] newengland32.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
This

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll admit to a bias on this one, of course, since I'm a huge fan of Rose.

My issue with that comment is that, from an objective standpoint, both the Doctor and Rose were equally clingy. Rose used her clinginess to build the dimension cannon. The Doctor used his to, well, emo a lot (and obviously did all the other stuff we saw in s3). I think anyone who denies their entire relationship is a bit clingy is watching the wrong show, but Moffat singled out Rose, the woman, when he's previously called all women "needy" and said they're basically out for husbands.

If he'd called them both clingy I think it would have been a far more accurate statement and less indicative of his bias.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, omg. ♥ I love this comment. The people just "not getting it" are frustrating me so.

[identity profile] roboplege.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so very much!

[identity profile] babel.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so so so much for posting this. The other comments were making me crazy but I couldn't remember some of these details to make a comment such as this myself.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-18 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Rose is totally a "clingy girlfriend." Friends kept trying to get me into this show but it was only when she got kicked out on that beach that I bothered. What a whiner she is.
