I don't really find this too big of a deal. Shakespeare is meant to be watched, after all.

The plays were written to be performed; there's no shame in knowing them only through film.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-04 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the suspicion you would be a highly obnoxious person to know.

You should give them a try sometime. :)

[identity profile] faorism.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you at least seen any of them performed?

[identity profile] elegant-corpse.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet you might enjoy his plays if you gave them a try. It sounds like you enjoy the film versions, you might just like them written as well.

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading them might not be as fun as watching but you already have the base there for enjoying his work in the first place so read some of his plays OP. It means you have more time to think about things than you do when you're watching. So then you can see if the opinions you've heard are actually something you agree with after all.

[identity profile] meezardra.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Think of it as the transcript for a movie or a TV show. It was written to be performed in front of you, not necessarily read by you.

Verily, thine is a fair story, knave.

(And as everyone says, dude, the plays are plays — they're meant to be performed, so big fuckin' deal, holmes. You sound like a smug pain in the ass, nobody likes that guy who has to whip out his or her intellectual dick and wave it in everyone's faces to show off.)

Eh, as long as you're enjoying yourself and not lying to people about having read them. Or being obnoxious.

No big deal, really. Hopefully you've seen the good film versions! Have you ever actually seen them performed? That's where the real magic is, to be honest. But if you like them so much, you should definitely read them too. It's pretty awesome.

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel too bad. They're plays. They are meant to be watched and not read. That's like feeling bad for preferring to watch a movie rather than simply reading the movie's screenplay.

As others have said, these are plays. Better to see them performed than to read, so long as the performances are good.

You should give the Canadian TV series Slings and Arrows a try. Its a show about a shakespearian theater troup, is excellent, and available on DVD. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-02-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand the logic -- the film is the play performed. However, playwriting and screenwriting are very different. Film is visual. They are written and performed for visual effect.

Plays are linguistic -- you are meant to hear the language above all else. Since depending on where you sit in the theatre, you might not be able to see the actor's faces clearly.

What might be three lines in a play is one on screen because the actor's close up will fill in the rest of the story. Plays don't have the luxury of the close up, montage, or the crossfade. Also Shakespeare lacked the luxury of female actors for his female parts. Hence the language would be more expressive, visual, and encompassing.

Read his plays. Immerse yourself. And you're probably going to take the above and quote it as your own. Fine. Just know I earned graduate degrees in a subject I'm very passionate about... and that passion cannot be replicated -- unless you fall for Big Will yourself!

I think what got me from thinking no big deal to 'you sound obnoxious' is the 'I debate with people and sometimes win' and 'I eavesdrop to get my knowledge on'...

Seriously, who the heck do you debate with? Kids? Also, way to get your information, cause second hand from someone else's conversation is the best place to get knowledge.

It's like Wikipedia..only in RL.

[identity profile] cassierua.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well they're plays, and therefore written to be performed, so getting your opinions from films isn't bad. I have always found it better to watch performances of Shakespeare's plays, just to get the story, and then read them.

They are excellent. Like, really brilliant. And once you know what's going on (and a lot of good productions will flag the big imagery etc.) they're really a joy to read.

I would also discourage basing your arguments on overheard opinions: you could end up looking like an idiot just from mishearing or misunderstanding or even worse, the person you're listening to having no clue what they're on about.

(But on the good adaptations of Shakespeare: Richard III with Ian McKellan is so gooooood. Watch it post haste!)

[identity profile] tocasia.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
That's not too hard to fix if you feel strongly about it.
Just make sure to read an annotated copy of the play/plays for the historical context.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
meh, not that big a deal. They're plays, they're meant to be performed. But still, I like reading em. You might too =)

[identity profile] theatarantina.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
poseur

[identity profile] violent-aki.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with everyone's rationale, but you still make me a very sad English major :(

[identity profile] oldstarnewshine.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Read them, OP. There are some truly fabulous filmed productions out there but plays are meant to be staged, on a, you know, stage. There are just different conventions. Films have the luxury of a zillion techniques plays can't utilize. The story's the same, but the way you experience it is very different. If you can't get to a stage production, read them and create that experience for yourself.

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
That's fine. But you're missing out.
If you love his stories that much, there really is no excuse for not reading the original plays. (Didn't you at least have to study him in school?) There are always things left out of the film versions. Likely chunks of his famous flowery prose, in this instance. I wouldn't want to supplement my knowledge with what people say alone. If you can get through the films with a decent understanding of the dialogue, then the books themselves should be no problem for you.
Also one day you may find yourself in a sticky situation when you engage in those discussions. Because you don't know it all.

[identity profile] carey-pontmercy.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
