(And as everyone says, dude, the plays are plays — they're meant to be performed, so big fuckin' deal, holmes. You sound like a smug pain in the ass, nobody likes that guy who has to whip out his or her intellectual dick and wave it in everyone's faces to show off.)

You should give the Canadian TV series Slings and Arrows a try. Its a show about a shakespearian theater troup, is excellent, and available on DVD. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-02-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)Plays are linguistic -- you are meant to hear the language above all else. Since depending on where you sit in the theatre, you might not be able to see the actor's faces clearly.
What might be three lines in a play is one on screen because the actor's close up will fill in the rest of the story. Plays don't have the luxury of the close up, montage, or the crossfade. Also Shakespeare lacked the luxury of female actors for his female parts. Hence the language would be more expressive, visual, and encompassing.
Read his plays. Immerse yourself. And you're probably going to take the above and quote it as your own. Fine. Just know I earned graduate degrees in a subject I'm very passionate about... and that passion cannot be replicated -- unless you fall for Big Will yourself!

Seriously, who the heck do you debate with? Kids? Also, way to get your information, cause second hand from someone else's conversation is the best place to get knowledge.
It's like Wikipedia..only in RL.

They are excellent. Like, really brilliant. And once you know what's going on (and a lot of good productions will flag the big imagery etc.) they're really a joy to read.
I would also discourage basing your arguments on overheard opinions: you could end up looking like an idiot just from mishearing or misunderstanding or even worse, the person you're listening to having no clue what they're on about.
(But on the good adaptations of Shakespeare: Richard III with Ian McKellan is so gooooood. Watch it post haste!)

Just make sure to read an annotated copy of the play/plays for the historical context.

If you love his stories that much, there really is no excuse for not reading the original plays. (Didn't you at least have to study him in school?) There are always things left out of the film versions. Likely chunks of his famous flowery prose, in this instance. I wouldn't want to supplement my knowledge with what people say alone. If you can get through the films with a decent understanding of the dialogue, then the books themselves should be no problem for you.
Also one day you may find yourself in a sticky situation when you engage in those discussions. Because you don't know it all.
