Whaaaaaaaat? Leonard Cohen is a god, I'd probably have punched my ex.

Bull-crap, Leonard Cohen = awesome. Yesterday, today, forever.

What a weird thing to say. It's fine if somebody doesn't like him or doesn't care for his style, but it's not like he can't sing. He can and he's wonderful at it.

Additionally, I'm sorry your ex (I'm hoping?) is a lousy person.

Though your ex sounds like a douche, Leonard Cohen really can't sing. Yes, he's awesome poet and novelist, but his voice is terrible.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you say so.

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's a deal-breaker if there ever was one.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-04 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Leonard Cohen can sing like Bob Dylan can sing. He's a brilliant songwriter, but yeah....

[identity profile] lady-wormtongue.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Agreeing with the two anon posts. Cohen is a brilliant songwriter, and there are a lot of covers of his songs that I adore. I just think his voice is terrible -- and he speaks more than sings, so I will never understand why people make fun of William Shatner's singing but love Leonard Cohen's. *shrug*

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Leonard Cohen doesn't do cheesy guest spots singing "Rocket Man" in a bizarrely emphasized spoken-word style. Leonard Cohen actually sounds like a normal person. I think Shatner is really a model human made by space aliens which they didn't get quite right, which would explain everything. He's a prototype model.

[identity profile] lady-wormtongue.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, this is true. I like your thinking. =P

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever anon: your ex's doucheness (is that even a word) doesn't overshadow Cohen's awesomeness.

Aaaand now I have Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye playing in my head.

[identity profile] polly1esther.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Your ex has obviously a lousy taste! The fact that he cheated on you showed such a poor judgement that it makes all of his other opinions invalid.

Cohen is king, damnit.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
CLEARLY, this person is a fucking MORON. You're 1,000% better off WITHOUT him/her/it, anon.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. His stuff is awesome in spite of his voice, not because of it.

Imagine him singing some pop song with awful lyrics. It's not at all awesome. Now, imagine any of the good singers of the world singing Cohen: it's still great. Hallelujah sung by any other singer is just as sweet. Cohen's not about the singing, his genius is in the poetry and songs, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Sorry about the cheating ass, though.

[identity profile] asimaiyat.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
It is not so much as that he is brilliant at singing as that he is brilliant at, like, vocally interpreting poetry. You get the meaning of the songs more when he performs them, and that makes his vocals awesome regardless of technical singing ability.

[identity profile] serrende.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
He also gets better at it for every year. I've heard some of his most recent live versions of old songs on Youtube, and I think he sounds way, way better than he did in their original versions. The younger Cohen from the 70s, like "Songs from a Room" depicted on the secret, has nothing like the timbre and warmth of the older Cohen of today. He's learned how to get the very best from his voice, plus to surround himself with great background singers and awesome musicians.

(All this IMO only, obviously.)
