I'm going to have to chime in with what my friend wrote about Apple (I'm sure he could care less that I copypasta'd his facebook status):

Never understand how Apple manages to market old ideas as game changing innovation. I like my Mac and all, but the cult of Steve is creepy. I still think they owe their success more to good marketing than anything else. Sun, Commodore, SGI, Bell Labs and Xerox were much better in the innovation department but never seemed to translate that into Madison-Avenue-ese.

My issue is with Apple's consumer products (Iphone, ipod, this new super-Kindle) and their usability. They are not overly creative, and perform a function that's 10 year old news compared to the kind of gadgets you can find in Akihabara, and often with self-imposed limitations and proprietary standards (DRM, etc).

For example, my old no name mp3 player I bought used in Japan for $100 is nearly a decade old, has a tiny form factor, still keeps a long charge and plays my music collection -- including open source file formats and mounts on any OS (even my old SUN box) as an external drive. If I splurged for an ipod I'd be losing functionality that is important to me that this old piece of shit can do.

When my player dies and I end up replacing it with an Ipod (not much consumer choice in Israel) I'd be installing rockbox on it as soon as I get it out of the plastic. If I had an iphone and wanted to use it in any way that was useful to me, I'd jailbreak it as soon as it's on my desk, and I'd still be pissed that my fancy phone can't multitask or take a beating as well as my cheap Psion PDA from the mid-90's. I miss my Psion.

From an engineering standpoint, there's a lot of bread and butter functionality that goes missing, and yet, the marketing machine convinces the masses to buy their "solution." I realize I'm not the target audience for these things, but I still think it's amazing how great it must be to be an Apple shareholder when the massive growth that company has experienced owes a lot to the cult of Steve Jobs and his marketing team's ability to package off-the-shelf tech into enthusiastic brand loyalty.

What mp3 player do they have?

That is a brilliant comment of your friends. When I went looking for an mp3 player I looked around and compared different brands and came to the conclusion that I could get more and better features (compared to an ipod) for less money. So I went with the iriver and haven't regreted it.

Looking at the ipad objectively I don't understand why anyone would drop that much money on it. But then I only ever want an ipod when watching a commercial for an ipod. That is some damn good marketing.

Not that I'm interested in an iPad myself, but Jesus Christ, extreme much? Some fanboys out there are gonna line up for the thing, believe me.

How dare they have different taste than you.

My roommate was saying that he wants one because he is an old school Trekkie and they had similar devices on Star Trek. Of course, I only casually watch the series (I grew up watching TNG but remember hardly any of it, except sometimes when repeats come on SyFy channel and I actually catch them) so I have no idea what he's referring to.

TAKE IT!

I thought it was a consensus that that was a troll. At least I'm pretty positive it was.

I love Apple and all, but I dunno about the iPad. I think they can do more with it than they showed at the keynote, so maybe if it evolves and has more functionality like a laptop... then again, might as well get a Macbook/stick with my iPhone right?

TB1: I'm kinda sad this didn't get posted, even though the wank would've been tiresome. I just... agree.

TB2: No no no. Please seek help or talk to someone you trust. You can even keep up with fandom at the same time! Just, please, things don't have to stay the way they are now, and you're obviously unhappy. You can change that, and you can even do so without giving up fandom.

TB3: Oh, honey, it's okay. You just have something new to explore if you want to. This doesn't mean you're OMG TEH GAYS, it just means you might not be totally straight. You don't have to do anything about that, and even if you try you can always decide to stop at any time. Don't feel like you have to go to the DMV and pick up a Class 2 Citizen Lesbian License. And don't be scared!
