THIS. I tried to read the books as a kid and all I can recall is that they left me feeling depressed and weird and very not-good, even though I typically adore fantastical, bizarre stories. I get that not-good-weird (as opposed to good-weird, which I love) feeling every time I see any adaptation of the story, too.
I'm kind of curious about Burton's version because I figure he'll take that twisted, depressing vibe and run with it in ways that could be interesting, instead of trying to dress it up in cute clothes and pass it off as harmless.
