I'm way behind (season 3) but I've found that this show has more interracial couples than any other fandom I've ever been in. Even the BBC Christmas game had a mixed family at one point. Although I'm not far enough to comment on the validity of Mickey and Martha as a couple, I probably wouldn't really give it a second thought considering how much variety they've shown so far. But that's just me.

Don't you know that everything that RTD does is racist? Mixed couples are 'Racist', 2 PoCs in a couple is 'Very Racist'. A broken interracial couple is 'Racist', a happy mixed couple is 'Racist'. If it's a happy or broken couple with 2 PoCs it's 'Terribly Racist' and if there aren't PoCs in the couple? 'OMG WHY SO RACIST ONLY SHOWING WHITE PEOPLE??? DDD:'.

I'm not saying that DW doesn't have racism issues (it does), but some days the fandom acts like it never gets anything right either while it does, in fact, have a lot more characters of colour and treats them a lot better than 95% of everything else on TV right now.

So far I've seen Rose and Mickey, Donna and her would-be fiancé, and a family with a black father, white mother and mixed children (in the BBC game), IIRC. Wtf fandom. Those relationships, however fleeting they might have been, really stood out to me because I rarely see black/white couples on TV otherwise. In fact, I'm seeing far more black characters than I would've expected, period. Even if Martha and Mickey were haphazardly squashed together into a couple (or so this thread seems to imply), the simple fact that both of them happen to be black doesn't seem to be relevant considering there seem to be more mixed couples than black couples in general, at least, so far. The issue seems to be more how they treated it (arbitrarily pairing them up) than the fact that they're both black.

A lot of the animosity stems from the fact that Mickey was kinda badly treated by the Doctor and Rose in the first 2 seasons and that then, in S3, Martha was being treated as second best to Rose by the Doctor (something that I personally didn't really notice on first watching since my first ep was Utopia where everyone is awesome!).

Add to that that a good chunk of the fandom thinks that Martha's characterisation was very poor and you get the maxim that RTD is racist and therefore everything he writes is racist too.

And yes, the biggest problem with the pairing is that it's fairly random. The two characters had all of 30 seconds of interaction before that scene. Also, in TW S2, Martha DOES mention having found herself a "real doctor". There's a mention that she's on her honeymoon in COE. A lot of the fandom assumed that these referred to a particular character (don't want to spoil you since I don't know how far you've seen ^^) but it was never explicitly stated who this person was or even if it was the same person at all. Heavily implied yes but never explicitly sated and a lot of people took it as cannon so some of the confusion about Martha and Mickey comes from wondering what happened to Martha's original pairing.

Personally, I stole some talented people's head-cannon justifying Martha and Mickey's sheer awesomeness together and have been happy with it ever since!

I love Mickey and Martha. I did feel like Mickey got shafted in the first two seasons simply by a) being left behind and b) playing second fiddle to the Doctor, romantically. Anyone connected to the Doctor's companion, let alone romantically connected, is going to be shafted somehow. However, he got to be super badass once he stayed behind in the alternate universe, and I loved that he got to be with his "Gran" again. ;_; Even the characters admitted that they were taking him for granted at that point and didn't really know enough about him, but I'm glad he got to develop further from there. Plus him and Jake are bros4life.

I'm on s3 currently, and I'm already aware that Martha's being shafted because the Doctor still pines for Rose (not that I blame him, he nearly confessed to her after she did likewise). I can't really comment on her characterization so far but I find she contrasts well with Rose, in that she's a hell of a lot more intelligent, and she's very resourceful. On the other hand, it bugs me that the Doctor can't fully appreciate her yet since he's got his head in the clouds over Rose half the time.

Thanks for the spoiler warning, now I'm intrigued. I've had plenty spoiled for me already but that's very courteous of you. I've gotten the impression that End of Time is more or less a trainwreck; I almost wish it was optional to watch it (I never like reaching the end of a show), but I'll get to it eventually, lol.

I just wanted to butt in and say that The End of Time P1&2 isn't a trainwreck. It's simply another case of a show ending an era (the 10th Doctor) and there's no way for the creator to please everyone. So there's lots of complaining from people who didn't get the ending that THEY wanted.

I only started watching DW this past fall (after I fell in love with Torchwood), and I managed to catch up on all of the New Who episodes -- series 1-4 -- by Christmas. And trust me, there's nothing in the 10th Doctor's finale that seems horribly out of character, wrong, or an affront to all that great sci-fi stands for. But you'd never know it by some of the fans' reaction.

To each their own, but I would suggest keeping an open mind because the DW fandom has been wanktastic since the '60s, and the build up to a regeneration event always seems to cause an even greater influx of wank. That's why I pretty much left the show alone for years. I have more than enough drama in my other fandoms.

I've slowly started to get into the fandom, but I've been avoiding the main comm just so I don't get spoiled. Generally I enjoy things better if I stay outside of the Internet fandom and just talk to friends about it; thankfully it's been pretty easy to get friends catching on.

LOL no. I didn't like End of Time because I felt it was poorly written with bad special effects, some of the acting was terrible and the ending would have been just fine if it had stopped before the final ten minutes - I didn't need to see any particular character get a particular ending, but way to generalise!

And IMO, Ten's final words are out of character.

I agree. But at least they made everyone I was watching the finale with break out into helpless fits of laughter. Nearly missed the new guy's lines because of it. XD Thanks, RTD. ^^

Like I said about the Martha thing, in the first episode I saw I didn't feel that the Doctor didn't treat Martha well, just that he was still pining for Rose (interestingly,I got that impression from Martha rather than anything the Doctor did) so that did colour my judgement a bit until I watched the series in order. And of course Martha is awesome and smart and resourceful and I'm always a bit weirded out when people don't see that...

Well, End of Time for me was a bit of a WTF experience but rewatching the two part together did make it better. It wasn't the most brilliant episode ever but note that people not in fandom tended to like it a lot more than those in fandom. You'll get a lot of positive reviews from sci-fi blogs and such.

(Personally, I disliked Journey's End much more than I did End of Time. Both have reunions but I feel like End of Time is a lot sweeter, with the Doctor showing that he did care for all his companions and that he does miss them all. but YMMV on this ep)
