Do people not realise that Hugh Laurie is an actor and you know, not actually Bertie Wooster or House? I don't follow them much but I imagine I'm right in saying that we see a lot of Stephen as himself in QI and documentaries whereas most of the time Hugh Laurie is on television he is playing a character?

I still don't understand how people can refuse to watch/like something solely because of what an actor was in before. House is a good show, and if you don't like it because of the story or something, fine, but you should at least give it a chance.

And just curious, but has your friend ever watched anything he's been in other than Jeeves and Wooster and Blackadder? Because he's actually played so many roles that I'm pretty sure I'd find him believable in any role possible. Shoot, he even had a variety of roles in Abofal.

Wow, I don't know why I care so much, but one last thing and then I'm done, I promise. I'd just like to point out that if your friend takes celeb personas into account and not just the roles they play, well, based on interviews, he doesn't seem to have changed a whole lot. Except maybe he has to talk more without Stephen sitting next to him.

Actually, I've noticed a lot of the people who are all "ooh, can't watch House, I love Fry & Laurie or Jeeves and Wooster too much" are mostly people who got on the bandwagon long after the shows were finished, and are either snobby Brit-philic Americans or snobby anti-American Brits. It's nothing to do with Laurie himself - they're just showing off how cultured they are.

A genuine fan like you shows them up rather quickly!

I'm a fan of both Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie but I don't like House because I'm bored of medical dramas. I agree with you that many fans who don't like House are snobs and it has nothing to do with Laurie himself. Those kinds of fans are ridiculous.

And I haven't watched House in a few years because I like medical dramas but House's medicine is now unwatchably bad. There's lots of good reasons for not watching House, but "ooh, Wooster!" is not one of them!

Gah my dad does the same thing! Almost every time House is on, he complains about how he "can't buy" Hugh Laurie as an American because of his stuff on Blackadder and such. LOL at my dad's supposed Anglophilia, especially funny because we're from the US.

I just have to say, despite the content, seeing a Fry and Laurie secret (or picture... or anything, really) never fails to put a smile on my face.

That said, X needs a good swift kick. Is s/he just angry that they're not working together much anymore? Because I'm fairly sure that they wouldn't hesitate to clear their schedules and do something, if they were so inclined. Which absolutely needs to happen soon, but it's not like I'm mad at them for it. If anything, I'm glad I get a little new Hugh ever week. ♥

I think they are both amazing. Even if X doesn't think that HL is a good actor, why s/he gotta hate? It's not like there is a competition between the two of them, they appear to be really awesome friends.

Hearing Hugh Laurie with an American accent is what freaks me out, not the role he plays (he does it really well). It's just *wrong*.

I might get used to it, if he was on a better show. I hate House, though, it sucks.

One of the reasons people are more focused on Hugh instead of Stephen is that Stephen has focused on things other than acting for a long while, so he's not the one who's forefront in everyone's brains. *shrug*

I am a newish fan and a bit of an Anglophilic American, at least in terms of television. I think our sort is prone to this sort of thing because we just watched and loved the old shows, so I sympathize with X's feelings, except for one big thing: they don't have to talk about it! I NEVER bring up this opinion to people who talk about House or watch House, and I don't judge them for liking it, I'm glad they do. I just keep up with other shows and do other things. So, my issue with X is not the opinion but just the announcing of it.

I can't comment on the Jeeves & Wooster vs House issue, but I can kinda understand where your friend is coming from. When I saw the first episode of Firefly I was nine kinds of creeped out by Nathan Fillion, because the last role I saw him in was the preacher in Buffy. I will freely admit that it broke my brain and I didn't watch another episode of Firefly until a year later, which I still curse myself for. Not saying that it's the same issue with your friend, but I can understand brain breakage (Wooster to House is a pretty big difference) but if it's pretentious nonsense, then that's unforgivable.

That Nathan Fillion thing broke my brain too, but I watched them backwards and within a few months of each other. Well, it didn't really bother me so much as amuse me, but maybe that's just because I delight in that sort of thing.

And I totally agree about brain breakage being understandable but pretentious stuff annoying.

I don't dislike House, I just can't take it seriously. I've never actually watched a whole episode, so I can't say whether I'd like it or not, and I would more than likely get over the whole "LOL, Prince Regent" thing, but I'm just not a fan of medical dramas in general.

One of my friends does this. I watch the show because it's entertaining, not because it's some sort of pinnacle of medical drama, but they really don't seem to grasp that and complain about how it's a waste of Hugh Laurie's talents and crap :/
