It sounds to me like you, yourself, are putting negative connotations on the idea of being homosexual. They're not just saying "GAY" as a judgment, they're saying "guy a and guy b are together" as a plot device.

YOU are making a judgment.

I think the secret is more saying that people are like "This person has to be gay because..." Iow, finding little "tells" in their personality that mean they can't be straight--as opposed to just shipping them because you like that pairing. Like I figured that the RPS referred to stuff like tinhats seeing secret gay conspiracies.

At least that's how I read it--I could be wrong!

While the OP did mention that (and I do agree that is problematic), they also mentioned people who assumed that two characters of the same gender were having sex (which is what I think the other anon was addressing with Neville/Luna comment), and people who take a lack of interest in the opposite sex as a sign of interest in the same sex (which is also problematic, for different reasons). This secret was kind of all over the map.

And it bugs me to no end that some of the same people who scream at the top of their lungs that a feminine male has to be gay would wince or complain if there were a very macho canonically gay male character.\\
