Fandom, better than judging others and making assumptions? lol. When has that ever been true.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds to me like you, yourself, are putting negative connotations on the idea of being homosexual. They're not just saying "GAY" as a judgment, they're saying "guy a and guy b are together" as a plot device.

YOU are making a judgment.

Do you call people close minded when they ship Neville/Luna?

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
This has been bothering me IRL as well as fandom. It's fine to say that you don't care what choices people make, but the second someone falls out of stereotypical gender roles that they're homosexual? Very frustrating.

I totally get you, OP.

WHAT I'M PREDICTING

(Anonymous) 2010-02-19 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
When people say that they 'don't judge', they usually mean moral judgments. Everyone makes assumptions about other people based on their behavior. So unless you think that there's something wrong with being gay, then there's no hypocrisy going on here.

I do agree with you on one thing: I hate it when people say that a character who cares about his appearance, or displays any 'feminine' traits must be gay. But, honestly, people assume that any two fictional characters in a close relationship must be fucking. I like that we now apply the same standards to same sex relationships that we do to ones between characters of the opposite sex.

But RPS shipping/slash/whatever is just too much fun! :D
and I think most fans do realize it's all in their head.

[identity profile] accented.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
There are very few fandoms that are as nice as you want them to be, hate to say it.

[identity profile] kiraya.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
So... I find it interesting this is all about gay stuff. What, no complaints about the "OMG HE'S A GUY AND SHE'S A GIRL AND THEY'RE BEST FRIENDS, THEY'RE OBVIOUSLY SLEEPING TOGETHER" that's only about a billion times more common (in most things anyway, even if not your parts of fandom)?

I don't think that being gay is the same as being pigeon-holed, and I don't think perceiving as gay is the same thing as character assassination. :(

I think you probably make a decent point about non-traditional gender roles and perceived sexual orientation, but honestly I'm too disappointed with the negativity about being gay to want to explore it.

Guy is a military macho-man type? GAY

Guy is clearly shown in heterosexual relationships? GAY

Guy is an average joe everyman? GAY

The point is, while I agree there's uncomfortable stereotyping in slash/yaoi fandom (OMG HE MUST BE AN UKE BECAUSE BLAH BLAH BLAH), people ship... everything! Especially the characters they find attractive. So I don't think that this particular line of reasoning holds up.

I agree with so many of these comments, but also I love how you feel YOU can keep your "personal fap fantasies" out of your "judgments" but other people can't. A lot of shipping is fantasy, whether romantic or sexual.

People ship almost every variety of het couple in many fandoms. That people are picking up on the same kinds of vibes for slash couples in my opinion can only be awesome—less heteronormative that way.

[identity profile] imadoctornotalj.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Is it any worse than just assuming a character is straight because they fit certain heteronormative gender roles? I think most people (the ones I've encountered, at least) do it all in good fun. This is fandom, we love slash. We love shipping males with other males and we like the idea that our favorite celebrities are secretly having gay bromance sex. That doesn't mean we actually think said people ARE gay (except crazy tinhats, but I haven't really encountered them) and it doesn't mean we think the characters will ever be gay in canon. So I guess I don't see the big deal.

[identity profile] roxiful.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
lmao, judging Judys.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-19 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
...ngl, while reading this, the thought that came to mind was "whatsamatta Star Trek fandom not hetero enough for you?" yeah, yeah, it's about "fandoms everywhere" I know :B

[identity profile] whitepawn-alice.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
...What about thinking characters are bi? Are we allowed to do that? Also, I hate the argument that liking slash=getting the character wrong. Yeah, it's rarely canon, but that doesn't make it OMG IMPOSSIBLE/OOC.

Debbie Downer
Bitter Betty
Partypooper Pam

In relation to your secret: don't you know? Everyone in anything ever in fandom is gay.

I agree that not everyone needs to be gay and slash-paired but it definitely could've been worded better.

I think it's more 'everyone is potential gay, this is just who we think they're gay with'. Or perhaps Transformers fandom has spoilt me.
