1) Shipping's about fun. Lots of shippers don't really believe their pairing will exist or does exist or that their character is canon-gay. The OMG SO GAY reaction is about seeking gratification - straight women seeking their own fanservice; queer women seeking their own representation; both; or many many more ways of enjoying a gay male relationship visually, textually and emotionally.

2) Most people don't treat real people with fandom rules. I've had a few cases where I've casually 'shipped' male friends, but it wasn't that I was JUDGING THEM AS GAAAAY or sexualising them, I was looking at them together and getting warm fuzzy feelings by proxy from the sheer extent of their Bro Radiation.

3) I know it gets blurry in RPS, but personally I think as long as you keep yourself to yourself and remember that you're fangirling real people who have their own comfort zones, you can tinhat all you want. People tinhat about celebrities all the time, right? So why is saying 'I think he's gay' necessarily that bad?
