Signed. I used to ship B/B in fanon and enjoyed all the subtle little moments we got in the first two seasons, but my main reason for enjoying Bones was the cast as a whole, not just B/B, and because it was a smart and well-written procedural with the perfect balance of drama and humor. But at some point HH and co. decided they wanted to write a slapstick rom-com instead and made it all about B/B, and I was like WTF this isn't what I signed up for and bitched about it on the internet for a while before I finally just stopped watching.

tl;dr IAWTS

ETA: Oh, and in before defensive B/B stans

lmao ikr

"BUT THE SHOW WAS ABOUT THE B/B RELATIONSHIP FROM THE VERY FIRST EPISODE! IT WAS NEVER A CRIME PROCEDURAL SHOW. IT'S ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT THE CHARACTERS AND UST!!"

*nodding* I said this over on [livejournal.com profile] daysofourbones recently, and I'll say it again here:

Many shippers will argue with that procedural statement by saying that this show has always been "character focused," not case focused. However, the point being missed is that the show was more character focused when they concentrated on the case instead of on pushing a romance.

When the show becomes all about the romance, there's really nowhere for the writers to go. They either have to put the characters together or keep them apart, and as a result it can get too soap opera-like.

On the other hand, when the show concentrates on the entire cast of characters, and all their connections, as they work together on cases, then it becomes a much more balanced program. Everything becomes important. Everyone has a story waiting to be told. We saw that in the marvelous little ways, in the briefest snippets of dialogue, like when Angela alluded to her father's profession but said she didn't want to talk about it, which automatically clues the viewers in that there's something interesting there that could be examined eventually. Or how Hodgins didn't want anyone to know he was rich, and how we know absolutely nothing about his family... two very interesting pieces of his life that we could learn about. Or all the things we could have seen evolve through Zack. Or how we don't really know much about Cam's background -- she seems like she may have come from a well-to-do family, which could be interesting, especially given that she became a cop, not necessarily the job of choice for someone from that background, you know? And there's still so much about Booth and Brennan as professional FBI partners and as individuals that could be illuminated. Not everything about Booth and Brennan has to do with whether or not they love each other or will ever get together. Frankly, I found their connection and their character stories much more riveting and genuine when the focus wasn't on romance but on a natural progression of them connecting as people.

There's so much that could be explored, for all these characters, if only the writers would stop to think about it all and give them the attention they deserve. Unfortunately, with the way things have been going, and how the writers keep leaning on only one aspect of the show these days (the out-of-character romanceromanceromance! behaviors), I fear it may be too late.

THIS SO MUCH. I don't know why people just don't get that. There's a reason why rom coms are two hours long--because when an entire plotline revolves around the will-they-won't-they tension, there's only so long you can sustain it before it gets, as you said, too soap-operaish. And sometimes even that gets old--I'm so glad Grey's finally finished the Derek/Meredith drama and wisely decided to focus on other characters. I don't really have much to add because I don't think I could've put it better than you have. :)

Thank you. :)

I really appreciated reading your comments in this thread as well, especially the part about how it used to be a "smart and well-written procedural with the perfect balance of drama and humor." THIS, so much. I wish we weren't the unhappy few to see it that way. I wish Hart would get things back to that kind of balance.

I know he can't erase what he's done with the characters in the past season and a half (more's the pity), but if he just made a few adjustments, I really think things could be salvaged. Unfortunately, our opinions are not being heard or even considered. (I guess we're not as loud as the Heroes fans who got really mad about the disintegration of their show, LOL.)

I haven't fully caught up on S5 yet but from what I've seen and heard other people say, they've definitely scaled back on the silly humor and B/B anvils. I dare say the show is actually watchable again (mostly) but it's a far cry from what it was. Progress, perhaps?

I'm glad you enjoyed my comments; I'm usually too blunt for my own good and lack the ability to write posts as in-depth and insightful as yours. :)

[identity profile] sinkwriter.livejournal.com 2010-02-21 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd agree that they've cut back on the anvils and the silly humor (thank goodness), and I also think you're right that it's a far cry from what it was. I was just saying to [livejournal.com profile] britishwannabe below that it's almost too little, too late for me at this point. I'd like to believe that the show is salvagable, and in some ways, it probably is (especially if they keep writing solidly like they did with Proof in the Pudding). But at the same time, I think the overemphasis of the B/B relationship throughout season 4 has ruined them for me. This season, even when we get a decently-written scene, episode or moment, I still find myself eye-rolling at Booth and Brennan because I've become so disillusioned after being forcefed their relationship. I don't want to eyeroll, but I can't seem to rediscover my enthusiasm for them.

That's not exactly the reaction the writers are probably going for.

;)

I nominate you as the official spokesperson for those of us upset with the show's direction, Sherry.

[identity profile] sinkwriter.livejournal.com 2010-02-21 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hee.

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] britishwannabe1. I really appreciate that. :)

If I thought it would do any good, I would gladly sit down with Hart Hanson and tell him just what I said in my above post. Sometimes I wish there were a way to get through to him in that regard. For all of us to do so. I wish we could be heard.

And, you know, I know that sometimes writers and showrunners have to do what they think is best. I know this. They aren't always going to do what the fans expect or think they want. But truly, I do think that the quality of the program is diminished by what he's doing (or not doing, as the case may be) with the characters now. The genuine connections are being lost. I really do think that. We get it back in bits and pieces, in occasional scenes, or in episodes like Proof in the Pudding, but in an overall sense, that's not enough. Not when every episode used to have a focus, a decent meaningful direction, and inclusion of all the characters in interesting and heartening ways.

Would you agree?

[identity profile] britishwannabe1.livejournal.com 2010-02-21 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I totally agree! Believe me. The balance that was had in s2 really made the B/B relationship compelling, and now that its become the focus of the show, its in the spotlight too much and its hurting the progression of what was potentially a great ship.

I still love the show, but I do get disappointed in it sometimes.

[identity profile] sinkwriter.livejournal.com 2010-02-21 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Very much agreed.

I still love the show, but I do get disappointed in it sometimes.

Oh, you definitely don't have to explain in that regard. In fact, I think you're much kinder to the show than I am. I'm not sure I can say that I love the show anymore. I definitely feel the disappointment. And I think the overemphasis of the B/B relationship throughout season 4 has ruined them for me... this season, even when we get a decently-written scene, episode or moment, I still find myself eye-rolling at Booth and Brennan because I've become so disillusioned after being forcefed their relationship. I don't want to eyeroll, but I can't seem to rediscover my enthusiasm for them. It's frustrating and a little bit sad.
