Now I'll admit that slash fans are not always the PRIDE of a fandom, and that they can be a source of some pretty deep deposits of crazy (I have yet to read the threads above me, but I have faith that at least one dedicated fan will not let me down!) But to say that they have no place in the fandom utterly rubs me the wrong way. There's value to be had in any contingent, even ones you don't agree with. Even with all the abundant crazy, I have still met wonderful people and read interesting works of fiction that I would have never seen if they had not been associated with slash fandom. Also, I think there's an interest in straight pairings at least on par to gay pairings - it's just that the slash fans tend to be more vocal about it. There are more people who would look at a guy-girl pairing and offhandedly say "that would rock", but it's the slash fan who would probably be more likely to build a webpage about it, that's probably the biggest difference.

tl;dr: I do not believe that slashers are "what's wrong with the fandom as a whole." Now people who would cut off whole sections of fandom because they don't suit their personal perceptions of how a fandom SHOULD be? THAT'S what's wrong with fandom as a whole!

I know you didn't say "all," but I read this and started laughing - you've never hung out in my latest fandom. There are a LOT more LJ communities and websites dedicated to a particular 'het ship than to the dominant slash 'ships in POTC.
