Hypothetically, if someone doesn't actually like the source material at all, except for the potential to slash-ship (or any kind of ship), do we even still call them fans? :S

I wouldn't tend to think so.
A fan of the series/game/whatever should, y'know, be a fan of the sereis/game/whatever.
Then at least they're not going "just for the [ship] fuel," even if it is their biggest interest.

I don't see why you're so upset about it. If all a fan cares about is what they can see with their slash goggles and you think they're missing out on the story itself, isn't that more their loss? The slash in fandom has no effect on the canon material anyway (unless the author/creators get annoyed by their fandoms and fail to realize this).

I've found a ton of wonderful fandoms by watching/reading for "slash fuel." I don't have the time to check out all the things my friends rec me and they will usually go "it's pretty gay" and link me to some stuff that makes me think "oh, that's cute." This is how I've found a lot of series with incredible writing, plots, and characters. It's the same as someone recommending I check something out because it's a genre, setting, or plot that I love or characters that I think would be cool. I'm not there simply for the slash fodder. Once I get into a series, I'm there for the plot, characters, and ships (and yes, I have multiple het ships in fandoms with a lot of "slash fuel").

Think about it for a moment, OP. If people want het pairings, all they have to do is turn to pretty much any mainstream media, and bam, het pairings galore. Fandom is pretty much the one place where people can HAVE their slash pairings. Seriously, consider how many popular TV shows/movies/books/games/etc. have canonically gay characters that aren't just played for laughs. And of those canonically gay characters, how many of them are actually in pairings? Not very damn many.

95% of my ships are canon het ships, but I'm not going to pretend that it's oh-so-hard to find het stuff out there when I can go pick up practically any type of media off the shelf and find it full of het pairings.
