You don't buy that there was racism involved with the casting? That Hollywood is dominated by Caucasian actors and that actors and actresses of color have a much smaller chance of being cast in leading roles? Or that the entire world of Avatar was based on asian cultures, martial arts, clothing and philosophy?

... well okay then!

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually I just see a lot of wank-happy fans playing the racecard because they didn't like the idea of a live action film.

It's a shame they picked a topic so close to my heart. Actually, it makes me really upset.

These guys? They aren't helping the fight against racism and intolerance. They're making a mockery of it.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The representation (or lack thereof) of POC in popular media has absolutely no real-world influence, amirite?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
This. So hard.

[personal profile] convault 2010-02-24 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think most people were honestly pretty excited about the live-action film! I mean I know a lot of them weren't, but the ones protesting the film 'cause of this issue? A lot of them who WERE excited got really disappointed.

Though I do agree that fans on either side of the debate aren't making it look any better.

And if you check ONTD, they're really not playing any racecard. I saw the comments and I raged for a bit too, but those people aren't gonna be changing their opinions anytime soon, so they should... find someone who might? The louder people get, the worse they look on any side, I think.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually I just see a lot of wank-happy fans playing the racecard because they didn't like the idea of a live action film.

Are you fucking serious? You really, sincerely believe that all the people upset over this just picked this issue out of their ass, because they didn't want a live action movie made?

And you want sympathy because this is a subject close to your heart? The treatment of Asians in the media affects my fucking life, you stupid privileged bitch.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess you never noticed that the same people who loathed the idea of the movie in the first place were the same to take up the racism banner the second the movie was cast? And now about half of them have gotten bored with it, dropped it, and are now on the "OMG Aang's Not Smiling!!!!!" brigade?

If you think that half of the loudest people in the fandom are actually concerned about racism then you need to open your damn eyes. This is a convenient excuse for them to fandom wank. Some people in racebending.com are taking it seriously. Most of them are there because they like the drama.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)

Obviously we're not talking about the same people. Most of the ones I know we're either excited about the movie, or generally neutral. None of them have stopped complaining about the casting in order to focus on some other aspect of the movie.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess you and I must play in different fandom circles then.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously.

I guess you never noticed that the same people who loathed the idea of the movie in the first place were the same to take up the racism banner the second the movie was cast?

Where did you even get this? What, you think you recognized that in one or two people and now you're sure it's the motivation behind everyone who's spoken out about this issue?

People are taking it seriously because it matters. If you can't wrap your head around that, no one can make you understand... but at the very least, have the grace to shut up about it.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's because what's happening here is like what happens with Twilight. Okay, so it's one of many examples of how our society is racist or sexist. This is a problem. But most people that make a fuss about it only care about this shit when it's about this popular mainstream thing that all the cool kids are hating. I've known people that victimblame and spew the most offensive, misogynistic garbage who start parroting feminist arguments about why Twilight is bad. It's not because they actually believe any of it or apply that to real life - they just want to look hip and cool by hating on something mainstream.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is pretty much the point I am trying to make.

Dog-pile wank is the most bizarre thing, like one of those lights that draw in bugs to a bug-zapper. The fact that it's now involving something so incredibly important is very very sad.

[identity profile] hikari.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so it's one of many examples of how our society is racist or sexist.

Yes. It's a problem. People are trying to draw attention to the fact that it's a problem. So you're mad because..? Because you're again making some huge assumptions about the people speaking out? You're completely sure that they're not actually saying things they believe? Some of these people are legitimate activists. It is, in fact, possible to donate real time and money to things you care about, as well as talk about them on the internet.

And even if there are a few people out there (who are decidedly not the majority) parroting something they don't understand or practice? Doesn't make what they're saying any less true.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I've no doubt that many of the people in these conversations and discussions legitimately believe what they're talking about and apply it to real life.

I also don't doubt that at least as many others are only in it for the cool edgy points and really do only pay attention to it when it's about something mainstream.

[identity profile] hikari.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
And like I said: even if they are only doing it to be "cool" and "edgy" (which I question), does that make what they're saying any less true?

If people are feeling guilty, perhaps it's the cognitive dissonance they feel about supporting or defending a film that they know embodies racism and prejudice that's still a part of their culture.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
And like I said: even if they are only doing it to be "cool" and "edgy" (which I question), does that make what they're saying any less true?

It doesn't, but it cheapens the argument.

If people are feeling guilty, perhaps it's the cognitive dissonance they feel about supporting or defending a film that they know embodies racism and prejudice that's still a part of their culture.

Do you feel guilty when you buy coffee? Do you think people should feel guilty about drinking coffee, because of the cognitive dissonance of supporting an unfair trade?

Should people feel guilty about being able to eat whatever they want when so many people in the world are starving? Should people feel guilty about being happy because they know many others aren't? Should people feel guilty about loving someone they know holds bigoted views? Should people feel guilty about not always being angry about all the injustice in the world?

[identity profile] hikari.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
And you're willing to dismiss the truth that many people are speaking because you think the argument is "cheapened" by a few?

Again, assumptions. And even if I did drink coffee (which I don't): fair trade coffee is available.

There's a big difference between actively supporting something that's deeply prejudiced and not being able to feed all the starving peoples of the world. No one can't be responsible for anyone's happiness, and no one can force anyone to change their bigoted views. We can do our best not to support them, and to speak out against injustice.

And of course, there are a million things in the world for people to feel guilty about. I've done things I felt guilty about, and that went against my principles. But here's where the choice comes: when someone else points out that you're doing or supporting something that's wrong, do you deny it and get mad at them for making you "feel bad?" Or do you take responsibility for your words and actions?

[identity profile] rtydmartel.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
This is one of the most intelligent arguments I've seen in the internet in a long time. Both of you raise so many good points I don't even know which side to pick. I think that's good.

So, um, thank you both?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
You telling people they should feel guilty and horrible for going to see a movie is an asshole thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nowhere am I dismissing the truth they're speaking. I am raising my eyebrows at the people that get on their moral high horses and feel good about themselves for being assholes about ideals they don't even really believe in.

And hey, look at you, typing on a computer. You're actively supporting injustice. Every woman that takes her husband's last name is actively supporting sexism, even if she acknowledges that she's only doing so because of societal pressure.

People like you, that sit on top of the world and judge others for not making the same choices they do, really, really bother me. People are allowed to feel hurt by your arrogant condescension. People are allowed to feel hurt by your judgemental comments. They have no obligation to just accept what you say as the absolute truth and agree that they are terrible, terrible people.

I would actually REALLY LOVE to be excited about this film! It's amazing that it ever got made in the first place, it will bring new people to the show....I was worried, of course, but I wanted VERY BADLY for this to be something that I could support!

Unfortunately, that's now how things are working out.

And I'm not sure how being angry about whitewashing is "making a mockery" of the fight against racism and intolerance. They changed the ethnicity of the main characters and mangled cultural references due to a combination of thoughtlessness and the assumption that non-white actors aren't commercially viable. Why does having a problem with that make anyone an asshole?

I am honestly confused here.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Close to your heart?

THE RACISM AGAINST ASIANS AND THE IDEA THAT THEY CAN DISMISS SEVERAL MILLIONS AFFECTS ME DIRECTLY.

MY GOD.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
If you think that most of these wank-bullies masquerading as concerned citizens are sincere then you need to open up your eyes.
