Perhaps I was mistaken, if you're correct the guilt of going to see this movie appears disproportionate.

Why? Are you saying that it's okay for Avatar to use yellow-face, because other movies have?

Also, because the individual decides to see one movie in spite of poor decisions that does not necessarily mean they're horrible racist people as some comments make them out to be.

What comments, exactly, would that be. Because saying that we should boycott the movie is not the same thing as 'you're all horrible racist people.'

I rather thought your point was about being able to deal with people disagreeing and expressing their opinions in a community that allows it, whereas this seems to be on the lines of flaming.

You're right and I apologize. But all this stuff, where people say that racism is okay if they really, really want to see it offends me, on a personal level.

Good job, internet troll. Keep proving your point and make a mockery of people who actually are concerned about racism in one swoop.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Not a troll and not sure what point I'm supposed to be proving.

oh shit. Is this the person from yesterday?

They almost had me convinced, ha.

I don't understand what you're trying to go with here. We both agree that white washing is wrong, but that it's a problem in the media in general. We have both agreed that this movie is not the be all and end all of racism. I'm saying that I can see where someone could decide to see it, despite their personal opinions on race, because of other factors, but you say that if they go to see this movie they are saying that racism is okay?

I understand that you can't speak much louder than with your dollar, and acknowledge that a boycott might be the best course of action to make a statement about the casting of this particular movie; however, not every person is willing to make that sacrifice. I can't really comment on that, as it's up to the individual. That does not mean they are "Saying it's okay for [Hollywood] to use yellow-face," or "Saying racism is okay." There are other ways to protest and there are other movies to boycott as you pointed out.

I'm sorry if I have offended you in these comments, but in my humble opinion, raising the awareness of racism in Hollywood is far more important than boycotting any single film.

Just for the record, no, I do not think that.

I'm sorry if I have offended you in these comments, but in my humble opinion, raising the awareness of racism in Hollywood is far more important than boycotting any single film.

I think it's interesting that you say that raising awareness is more important than boycotting one particular movie as if a) boycotting isn't frequently used to raise awareness and b) the people boycotting aren't involved in any kind of activism.

I must have inferred your opinion incorrectly then. It seems like by your saying (typing?) "And I think that your (hypothetical) desire for pure, giggly squee is less important than serious issues, like representation of Asians in the mainstream media," indicates that your opinion that the excitement for seeing the movie somehow means that they can't be upset by the casting at the same time. For my sake, please clarify your position.

as if a) boycotting isn't frequently used to raise awareness and b) the people boycotting aren't involved in any kind of activism.

Boycotting can be used to raise awareness, but I don't think boycotting is what usually convinces the average joe to join the movement. That's done much more through discussion. The people boycotting are going to tend to be the more dedicated proponents of anything, just because they are the ones who will sacrifice more for it. However, the people at either end aren't usually the ones that have the most effect - it's the people in the middle who will. While I don't know what I'm going to do about Avatar (I'm waiting for reviews to see if it's made up for its flaws), I can say that whether I boycott this movie or not, I'm much more likely to take a second look at white washing in the future.

A single boycott won't accomplish nearly as much as a gradual shift. Instead of guilting people over seeing one movie, it's much more effective to ask them to consider the racial implications of casting in the future. As I said, Joe and Jane Doe might not be willing to boycott Avatar, but if the people who are active (through boycotting or otherwise) have had an effect, they still might decide not to see a similar movie.

It seems like by your saying (typing?) "And I think that your (hypothetical) desire for pure, giggly squee is less important than serious issues, like representation of Asians in the mainstream media,"

Not quite. It's more like, "It's dismissive and disrespectful to say that your desire to squee matters more than people's desire to express their outrage, disappointment or frustration over the representation of Asians in the mainstream media."

Does that make more sense?

It's interesting that you differentiate between the people that are boycotting and those who are trying to raise awareness of whitewashing. From what I've seen, the same group is doing both. Maybe there's a large group of people who are seeing the movie while being involved in anti-racist activism, but I certainly haven't seen it.

It is dismissive and disrespectful to some degree, but most people can't entirely polarize themselves. They might say "It's disrespectful, but the movie looks really good." This is a little hypocritical, but I don't think life is possible without some hypocrisy. It's just like another commenter was saying about the Olympics - in some ways they are a big waste of money which can go to improving a lot of lives, but they still enjoy the games, or people who won't wear fur, but still wear leather. I'm not saying it's right, but no one can decide what someone else's sacrifices should be. However, a person's squee over one movie doesn't mean that it matters more than the representation of race. I'm sure most, if not all, of those people would agree to never see the movie if it meant there would be a significant change.

After the trailer you saw no one who was talking about white washing starting to reconsider seeing it? What I'm saying is that there are people who raise awareness, but don't boycott as well as people who do both.

Do you wear any clothes made by people in sweatshops? Do you have any actual way of knowing for certain that you don't? Have you ever eaten food that may not have been grown ethically? Do you ever drive cars, spoken civilly with people who've held views you find morally reprehensible? Have you ever worked for a company that isn't completely perfect?

Unless you can honestly say no to all of those things, you have no reason or right to be ~offended~ by someone who wants to see a movie they acknowledge as being racist.

Ah, so only paragons of virtue are allowed to criticize people. Good to know.

And I'm not offended by people who want to see the movie. I'm annoyed when they claim that no one should ever criticize it, because it makes them feel bad. Obviously, I'd prefer if nobody ever saw it, but I'm not going to judge the people who do.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, only paragons of virtue are allowed to say someone is a bad person for not being perfect.

Hi there, strawman. The people saying they hate being made to feel bad are not claiming no one should criticize the movie. They're saying they don't like people judging them for wanting to see a movie that they personally are boycotting - which is exactly what you've been doing.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)

No, they're saying that the criticism should be timed so that it won't interfere with their squee.

And, where, exactly have I done that?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
racism is okay if they really, really want to see it offends me, on a personal level.

>implying that someone going to see a racist movie thinks racism's okay.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, that was a little bitchy. Sorry. But I do think it's disrespectful to say that the fact that a person is offended is less important than your desire to see a movie. It's fine if you actually do go and see the movie, my issue is with dismissing other people's concerns.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I can get behind that.
