I like how slutastic Miranda wasn't even mentioned.

And srry Joker/M shipper, but I think Joker and EDI were meant to be. <3~

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
o_O dude. I think I made this secret, possibly in my sleep. I completely agree -- of course Joker should be an option, his dialogue personality are great.

I also liked the Garrus thing from start to end -- "Your waist is very...supportive", ahaha, <3! -- and I honestly don't see why the game makers go out of their *way* to make Miranda and Jack (especially Jack) only 'male/female romance' options, and Garrus only female/male. It's got to actually be *more* work to exclude one gender from a scripted romance, rather than less. The homophobia is too clear to ignore.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would it be more work? All the dialogue has to be voiced seperately for male and female anyway. I would think it's the exact same amount of work or possibly even less.
Also, of course, there is the possibility that *gasp* not everyone who walks on two legs in the ME-universe is bisexual. I know, it was shocking to me too.
That being said, there was no particularly good reason not to make Jack a romance option for both sexes.

Apparently most of the women are.

[identity profile] pants4pants.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand that not everyone would be bisexual, but there are multiple alien romance options.

I woulda killed for a Male Shepard/Joker option.
I woulda killed more for a Male Shepard/Zaaed Massani option.

Fuck, Bioware.

I am so with you on this. Though, I would have even settled for a fem!Shepard/Zaeed option.

[identity profile] roadconezombie.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Either or. Zaeed needs more love.

I will never understand why people are so pissed about the romances in ME2. Yeah, sure, it sucks that there's no M/M option and that the only F/F option is kind of a joke. But people seem to want EVERY character to be romancable. It seems so silly to me, first of all from a practical standpoint (can you imagine all the dialogue options? How the hell do people even imagine a relationship with Joker-who-breaks-like-a-twig?), but also from a story-based POV. In real life, not everyone is interested in you. In real life, there are periods where you just don't meet interesting people. Having everyone potentially fall head over heels for Shepard would put serious strain on my suspension of disbelief. It's not Hollywood, for crying out loud. The romances are completely optional* and if you or your Shepard are not interested in any of the options in ME1 or ME2, there's always hope for ME3.

*= if you say 'I HAVE to do a romance because they made it an achievement' I will kick you. They FORCE you into a romance because you want to make your epenis bigger. STFU.

...it's probably easier than trying to your leg over a walking, talking lizard.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-27 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
...and by that I meant "get your leg over".

[identity profile] puppy-tenchan.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for ME2, but ME1 caused pretty similar debates, so I imagine the same still goes:

It is not about how realistic or nice the given options are, or how the player can or cannot enjoy them. It's about what kind of mindset is behind offering these options and not others in the first place. Specifically: why offer an F/F option but not an M/M option?
There is no answer to this that does not have to do with 'male gaze' culture. You know, the one where woman on woman is TOTALLY HAWT but man on man is TOTALLY EW. A culture that promotes homophobia is never a positive thing.
People are disappointed that yet again, a game developer who puts such great emphasis on relationships in their games has foregone the chance to promote a fair, equal view on homosexual acts.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-27 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit I was a bit mystified as to why Bioware, who usually seem pretty progressive about this sort of thing in their games, didn't add an M/M option in ME2. But I guess I just have a hard time interpreting decisions like that as a typical display of homophobia. My mind just automatically supplies reasons such as 'would cost them more idiotic customers than it would attract open-minded people'. Plus the fact that even if you include an M/M option, people will undoubtedly complain that it is the WRONG M/M option (look at Zevran in DA:O, who I loved as a character but was apparently cause for many people to get their knickers in a twist because he was such a stereotype). Basically, they're damned if they do, damned if they don't, except that if they don't, they don't scare away their homophobic customers. I know this sentiment is not a popular one and gets you remarks about how popular =/= good, but it is after all Bioware's and EA's investment and if they think this will get them the maximum amount of buyers, that's what they'll do. The only real reason for them to change this would be if it would actually cost them potential customers not to include them - and given the massive succes ME2 was, this is not so strong an issue people refuse to buy the game. I have high hopes for M/M romance in ME3, of course, but from the standpoint of EA and Bioware, I fully understand why they didn't include it. I just don't think corporations are responsible for bettering society.

[identity profile] soarer-visions.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack, especially, since she's actually admitted that she's bisexual. And Kelly is... well, Kelly. I don't think I need to elaborate. I don't know if Joker would feel comfortable with a same-sex relationship though, despite how M/M should be an option when F/F is. :/

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not, there's been some hot M!Shep/Joker fic. And I hope he'll be romanceable in ME3? But... yeah. Dunno. And I think Jack would've made an awesome bi choice.

The lack of homosexual options annoys me too, OP. If they had wanted to make Shepard just straight they shouldn't have thrown the lesbian options in. Double standard is annoying. I just play as a girl and pretend it doesn't exist lmao.

Could you point me in the direction of some? I think I can honestly say I have seen none, but I haven't looked too hard.

Huh. It seems like M!Shep/Joker is getting more popular. I'm wondering if that's just because almost every other recurring character is romancable and he's the only one who hasn't really been shown to lean one way or another (depending on how you feel about EDI...) I feel a bit hypocritical saying that, since I ship it too, but, I wonder anyway.

[identity profile] soarer-visions.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Dude! Tali said to FemShep herself that she would be honored to link suits with her if she were a quarian. I think that says something, don't you?! 8D

(Anonymous) 2010-02-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
they were still 1000x better than the first games.

[identity profile] greatbriton.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I agree about Jack. She should have been romancable by a male or female. :(

Joker as an option would be nice but I kind of loved the Joker/EDI stuff. they were so adorbs. I'd hate to get in the way of their ship flying.

[identity profile] bebopsamurai.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
SO agree on all of this. Frankly the only way I'm EVER making a Dude!Shep is if Joker is romanceable. Or Garrus. XD

And yeah, considering that Jack is, in fact, CANONICALLY bisexual, her straight-up telling you she doesn't sleep with girls is just bizarre. Though apparently Bioware wrote the M/M and F/F romances for EVERYONE and performed them, but cut them out at the last minute. Mods exist for it on the PC version though from what I hear.

[identity profile] puppy-tenchan.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Who whoa whoa, wait a sec... they cut out the MM option again?! I thought it was in this time!

Actually...

(Anonymous) 2010-03-07 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I have pictures of M!Shep/Garrus and M!Shep/Thane.

I hear Thane was intended to be a male romance too, but it was cut? I don't know, but...

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/66/1267261161324.jpg is Thane and M!Shep, and http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/4899/1267261861612.jpg is Garrus and M!Shep.

Not too great, but it's something?
