I don't know a great deal about copperbadge, tbh, but it's their right to hide their identity if they want to. Yeah, I can understand you wanting to know, but it's their issue, not yours. You aren't entitled to know the gender of a stranger on the internet. C'mon.

Also? Some of us don't do it to generate public interest, but because we genuinely don't want to be judged. You might be cool with it, but other people aren't always so accepting. If somebody feels more comfortable posing as a different gender, or keeping it a secret, that's their right.

But

copperbadge doesn't do much to hide his identity. Not only does he talk about his family, his job, his friends, he posts pictures of his apartment on a regular basis. It just seems weird that he's so open about his life, but reluctant to actually show himself.

Yes, I know that it's his choice, and he has a right to reveal as much of himself as he wants. But it's just so strange for a person to be so open and so private at the same time. It just makes me wonder.

I don't know... I mean, personally I wouldn't mind being quite open about some areas of my life on the Internet - I think it's inevitable after a certain amount of time, once you start getting to know people - but posting a picture of myself online is the last thing I'd want to do. It's just the line I draw when it comes to how personal information I reveal.

Then again I'm not well known in fandom at all so maybe this is a different case entirely from copperbadge's.

I don't know. It's not like he tells people specifically where he works, and he does use code names for the people he posts about. Thta tells me that he wants to blog the way a lot of people do (i.e. discuss their everyday life) but values privacy and RL/Internet separation. That seems really reasonable for someone with a huge readership.

Whether or not he's really a 'he' also doesn't matter to me. He's fun to read either way :-)

I may be misremembering, but I think he had a few issues with Really Creepy People way back, and became a bit more circumspect with regards to real-life info online. It's never struck me as odd, but most people I know use false names for friends and coworkers online. Because of the Really Creepy People.

I think one of his icons once featured a small photo of himself. Which proves nothing, I suppose it could have been a picture of anyone. The world will never know.
