As long as your thin skin is as easily bruised when het/femmslashers hate a female character, then fine.

I'm not overly fond of the belief that bashing female characters (or bashing characters, period) is something exclusive to those who slash.

Yes. Although I feel the need to clarify. I don't care if someone dislikes a character. I don't expect that everyone will like every character, and I enjoy debate over the actions/mindsets/merits of characters. What I don't like is when people feel the need to constantly go around saying "so-and-so sucks!" everywhere, all of the time. Especially if there really is no basis for the hate. There is a difference between a valid debate/criticism and bashing of a character, and I get upset when that line is crossed. Repeatedly.

An example of this was the message boards that I visited before the third season of Supernatural when it was announced that they were going to be adding two female characters. The amount of vitriol I saw just based on the fact that they were adding females that might *the horror* be potential love interests was epic. There was no possible valid criticism of the characters yet because we knew nothing about them at that point! I can understand disliking Bela and Ruby later (as friends of mine do), but at that point? Nope. And to tie it back to your original statement, it seemed that the negative reactions were not all from people who shipped Dean/Sam, and I disliked all of it.

It just so happens that most of my fandoms that have female character bashing are male-character-centric and thus the ones doing the bashing tend to be slashers. This is not true in every fandom, nor do I mean to imply it is true in every fandom. It has just been my experience in the limited fandoms I have frequented.

In addition to the Supernatural example above, another noted example is the House fandom that I briefly touched on in a comment above. I don't particularly care for Cuddy, but I rather like Thirteen. (I know, I know, she has faults, and she was definitely featured a lot during parts of the season. I just like her.) The bashing that those characters recieved (receive? I don't bother to check anymore) drove me the fuck out of that fandom, because I couldn't stand it. It was bloody everywhere, anytime anything about that show was mentioned. I'm sure some of it was from people who are House/Wilson shippers, but there was no way they were the only ones considering how much hate I've seen out there. Sigh...

Thankfully that is only a handful of my fandoms and there are several (Law & Order: SVU and Legend of the Seeker, to name two) where female charaters/femmeslash are/is loved. I find myself gravitating more and more to those types of fandoms as the years go on.

Well, someone is certainly being thin-skinned.

Anti-slasher leaving lots of comments, yay!
