Yeah, the soul destruction was a giant part of how pissed I was at the time. You're the first person outside my RL social circle that I can remember having mentioned it...it's like the lovers and the haters BOTH forgot that detail. Dunno how...

The soul being destroyed was the only true way you could get Fred to be entirely DEAD in a supernatural show. Especially since by that point Buffy/Angel characters were constantly trying to mess with the laws of nature to bring people back. I think it was also the writers way of telling the audience, "Yeah guys, Fred is dead. There's no coming back."

It sucked, but personally I was a little glad because I thought it would stop "BRING BACK FRED!" campaigns (unfortunately, it didn't.) Not because I hate Fred, but because I just get tired of those campaigns. I'm all for characters coming back here and there, but if every character who dies comes back, there's really no point of having "death" in a drama.

Plus, Illyria was kick ass. I think Acker really shined as Illyria, she definitely proved that she can be two distinctly different personalities.

I agree. The first time I watched it, I wasn't that upset, because I was absolutely sure they were going to get her back. The second time I watched it, when I knew she wasn't coming back, I cried so hard. When I say I'm upset about Fred dying, I always add "and her soul was consumed in the fires of resurrection!" So I'm with you. I don't even believe in heave, and yet still, it's not okay for Fred.

I never liked Fred but the bit about her soul being destroyed just seemed overly cruel. Not only does she die, but she ceases to exist altogether? That's just so sad.

I really disliked Fred, but even I didn't like the soul destruction thing. I also hated how she had to die for an entire episode. It was like "God Joss, we get it, she's dying. Just end it for her already, no one deserves to die like this!".

Illyria lied. She is evil, after all, and stopping the team from trying to evict her from the body she inhabited was in her best interests. The real travesty was that Angel and company believed such an obvious lie. Stupid network canceling the show and causing hasty writing. *sigh*

In the comics there is a Fred/Illyria thing going on but I am not caught up... My impression was Illyria was still using Fred's memories and Fred is still dead as dead can be.

I miss Fred so much. She was such a wonderful character. It actually scared me when she said her soul was destroyed. I couldn't really get into Angel anymore after that.

I am glad to hear in the comments for this thread that apparently the Fred's soul-burned up thing was a lie, but her death was still so sad anyway. There are 3 TV deaths that have made me cry and Fred and Wes fill two of those spots.

My icon is not the right mood but the only Wes or Fred related Icon I have.

The whole storyline just kills me. I think it's mainly my love for Wesley that makes me react so hard to her death :( Not to say I dislike Fred, I liked her well enough but... ugh the tragedy of it all just hurts.
