The AtS comic season written by Joss is pretty much everything he wanted to do with S6, apparently. Wes is actually in it.

I've read some of that, but part of it is that comic books are much harder for me to internalize and retain than television, and part of it is that Wesley is a ghost and it makes me sad.

Yeah. I can't get as emotionally invested in the comics either. I wish I could, because some of the things I wanted to see dealt with were resolved exactly how I wanted. But it isn't the same as seeing the actors.

I am not sure if Wes would have died had the show not been cancelled. I was at the last AtS convention they ever did, right after they got cancelled, but before the finale aired, and they said they had only planned one death, but since the show was over, they put it an extra. Maybe the unplanned one was Lindsey. They wouldn't say.

I think I read or heard somewhere (commentary track on dvd, perhaps) that Wesley's death was written in only after they realised it would be the last episode. It might've been actually Alexis Denisof who suggested it.

In the comics there is a Fred/Illyria thing going on but I am not caught up... My impression was Illyria was still using Fred's memories and Fred is still dead as dead can be.

I did not read all of the comics either, so I'm not sure how they wound up dealing with Fred there. But both Joss and Amy Acker said that the plan for S6 was for Illyria to start losing control over the Fred bits. (They also talked about having her cut in half- so Fred could come back, or at least trying. Knowing Joss that would have ended with tragedy and angst. Cause he's Joss. )

He wanted to play with "what makes you YOU?" - memories, a soul, etc. I don't know how it would have been resolved, but it seemed like he was leaning toward Fred definitely not being "Gone" with a capital G like Illyria insisted.

He also said Oz was going to be a recurring character. That I would have loved. :( (And he's not in the comics. So clearly the comics aren't exactly what he wanted for the show.)

I wouldn't figure the comics were exactly what he wanted for the show because Joss tends to know what you can do in comics vs what you can do in tv. And some of the things that have happened in Buffy season 8 I couldn't really imagine in the tv show.

That all makes sense though, the "what makes you, YOU?" theme seemed to already be popping up in season 5. I just didn't know if it had been really said or established anywhere that Fred's soul was still there.

Mannn... I would have loved a season 6 with Oz ;.; Damn, now I have to be mad about Angel being canceled all over again.

Like Dawn becoming a Centaur? Yeah. Good times.

They didn't establish if her soul was there or gone in S5, but I wouldn't call Illyria a reliable narrator. I am NOT sure if they establish it in the comic arc because frankly, I bought it for Angel, Spike and Connor.

OZ WOULD HAVE ROCKED. Him and Angel grunting at one another for an entire season... Heh.

I think just what happened to Dawn alone would have killed the special effects budget.

Angel, Spike and Connor are a good reason to buy comics. That's another reason I really would have liked a 6th season, I wanted to see some more of well adjusted Connor who just happens to have gotten the memories back of *not* well adjusted Connor.

One of my favorite Angel moments-

Angel: Oz.
Oz: Angel.
Angel: Nice surprise.
Oz: Thanks.
Angel: Staying long?
Oz: Few days.
(long pause)
Doyle: (to Cordelia) They always like this?
Oz: No, we're usually laconic.

You should read the comics then. Lots and lots of satisfying Connor. With his dad. With Spike. All of it. It's funny, and well written, and not just a little slashy.

I absolutely love post!AtS4 Connor. He was incredibly adorable and likable kid. I understood how he acted when he was all fucked up, but I honestly couldn't stand him pre-AtS5.
