Cheer up, OP and think of yourself to a X-Files scholar. Anybody who read and study Shakespeare for thirteen years would.

Thanks All- You really did help me put this into perspective. I guess it's more the secretive part that I'm ashamed of. At least cross-stitch and sodoku aren't quite as embarrassing to share with others...

OP :)

aw, you guys are really awesome. thanks! it's true, it could be worse. I guess it's just that it's sort of an isolating activity you know? Although so is reading which I also do as frequently. I guess I harbor some weird guilt that I'm not more social.

should I just let it the fuck go?

Aye. Let it go and try to add to your friend pool so you have people to geek out with.

Look for a comm, sign up for a site, or send a PM to me and the other people in the thread who also lived and breathed Chris Carter in the late nineties.

The series has really experienced a resurgence in recent years (due to an influx of new fans and the second movie). I became a fan only in 2008 and there are many new fans like me, as well as many of the old fans who have returned. There are lots of new forums, and of course Idealist's Haven and Gossamer are still going strong. There's even a Fox-sanctioned X Files News site that keeps us up to date on current happeneings and prospects for a new movie, I think you'd be surprised at how active and intelligent the fandom is today.

Seriously, look around for a forum or PM one of us for more information...we all have just about the same addiction to fic!

I could've written this. It's not so bad; everyone has hobbies that are not loftily academic. Reading copious amounts of X-files fic is no worse than reading trashy novels or watching TV. Or cross-stitching, for that matter. Besides, that fandom had some awesome fanfic (but I sort of had to stop reading new stuff when I stopped following the show because I didn't know what was going on in the fics. I sometimes go back to Gertie's and read stuff written 10 years ago, though.)

Why depressed, OP? I've spent half of my life with my nose in some sort of story - books, fic, writing, roleplaying..and I consider it time well spent because I've learned so much, had many interesting conversations and gotten alot of enjoy.

Follow your bliss! And if people dog you for it, tell them to fuck off.

And, oh, btw...I've been in the X-Files fandom about as long. I'm still there. I will never leave! :P

IA with other commenters: you'd never say "man, it's depressing how much of my life I've spent reading books" or "doing sudoku" or things like that. You're not reading fanfic to accomplish a goal, you're just doing it for fun.

[identity profile] 51stcenturyfox.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ain't nothin' wrong with cornbread that!

Do you have some recs? I bet you do. C'mon... five favorite fics? I'm in a reading mood. (Another fan and I are thinking about having a rec-a-thon soon for classics and older stories. Join in!) :)

(Anonymous) 2010-03-09 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but I'd be interested in that "classic fics" catch up. I think 1997-98 was when I got into XF fandom too. There are a couple of fics I remember well still: the Iolokus series, which I reread many many times, since I actually printed the whole thing out. And another massive post-colonization fic where M&S flee to Europe with some underground group, temporarily hide out in a windmill (!), then end up living in massive caves.

I have very fond memories of my intro to fanfic through XF! OP has nothing to be ashamed of.

+2

I didn't have a computer let alone internet when X-files was popular so I wouldn't know any great stories. I did read every piece of memorabilia issued tho'.

[identity profile] stjudesshipper.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad for all the time I've spent with XF! I think it made me a better, more discerning reader. Not to mention, I've read some really great stories.

John Lennon said "time you enjoy wasting is not wasted". and reading doesn't even count as a waste, cause it's fucking READING. :D
