So... do you not shop at any store, or browse any website or go to any school because conservatives might be working there or running the place or learning next to you?

Political prejudice is just as disgusting as every other form of prejudice. Grow up.

SRSLY! All this "Hoshit! He's a republican?!?!" And "Bawwww! Conservatives!" crap is such a downer. The world is made of different people yo! Variety is the spice of life!

Besides, it's not like they all share one big hive mind (though sometimes you might think otherwise) they are individuals with fluidity in their beliefs.

Re: 160.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-03-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The really fucking annoying thing is the hypocrisy behind it. "Oh I'm a tolerant person, I try to be inclusive to everyone and their views EXCEPT REPUBLICANS/CONSERVATIVES GET OUT YOU FUCKING NAZI HITLERS"

Re: 160.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Way to be open minded douchebags.

HAH. This, exactly.

Re: 160.

Holy straw man, Batman! There's a difference b/w "I cannot be friends with anyone who disagrees with me" and "I'm not going to give money to someone who will donate that money to politicians who will work against my interests." Idk what politicians the Dreamwidth crew support, and maybe there's no conflict here, but I definitely look up what parties corporations donate to.

It's amusing that you give people like the OP that much credit.

Might wanna check in on what DreamWidth actually supports. You'll find that it's probably very similar to what you support and I find it hard to believe that someone would face financial ruin on something they don't personally believe in.

Political prejudice is just as disgusting as every other form of prejudice. Grow up.

Hahaha no, no it isn't. No. Don't ever say that racial prejudice is the same as um not wanting to support an ideology that you disagree with.

Re: 160.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Doing negative things to someone for over some ridiculous reason they're "different" from you is disgusting. That doesn't mean someone being killed over their race is the same as someone being boycotted because of their political stance, but the discrimination is equally disgusting.

Re: 160.

[identity profile] oddrid.livejournal.com 2010-03-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP isn't doing negative things to anyone. They are refusing business to a person whose ideology they disagree with. Everyone holds that right. I shop according to my ideology a lot of the time (not all the time). I don't get pizza from Dominos because they contribute heavily to anti-choice causes, and I don't want any of my money being used for that cause. It's a way of being political in your everyday life. Conservatives and liberals alike do it.

Finally, having an ideology is miles apart from being of a certain race and if you can't understand that then I don't really know what to say to you.

Re: 160.

[identity profile] cykotyks.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem is that the OP doesn't give any reason aside from "this person identifies as a conservative so I don't like them." The person in question may have perfectly reasonable views, possibly even some the OP agrees with. Disliking somebody merely because of a label is pretty stupid in any case.

The OP has a right to put their money towards whatever they want to, but the rest of us also have a right to think they're kinda stupid to flounce out about it. The act of making a secret about it just looks like they're trying to get more people to boycott it for the same reason.

Re: 160.

[identity profile] oddrid.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough! I just wanted to defend the idea of shopping politically. The secret is pretty flouncy. But then again, a lot of secrets on here are so maybe I'm just getting immune.

Re: 160.

[identity profile] homestar.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see how it's any different. Judging someone negatively and refusing to buy from them/support their business based on something they cannot change (skin color, sex, age, sexual orientation) or something they should never be made to feel like they should change (religious beliefs, political beliefs) are both completely vile ways of thinking, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: 160.

[identity profile] oddrid.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I see what you're saying, I really do. But I think that comparing someone who doesn't want to support a business based on political beliefs (conservative OR liberal) to someone who is racially bigoted or religiously intolerant is really disingenuous.
ext_219784: (what a piece of work is man!)

[identity profile] spiderstars.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like the way this is phrased, it could be taken several different ways. For instance, the knee-jerk "oh god, you're conservative, I am not touching you ick" response is, in my opinion, vile. A lot of what's been popping up on F!S lately has struck me as incredibly narrow-minded and very childish. Knowing someone's vague political leanings and saying "ew, no" without bothering to know what exactly they believe and support is prejudice.

However, refusing to financially support a business whose income may be/is being used to support a political platform that you view as damaging to, for instance, your social rights, is, in my opinion, fair. For instance, I try not to financially support companies that have actively donated to anti-gay campaigns/issues. Similarly, I try to avoid companies who treat animals unethically, or are unconcerned when it comes to environmental preservation. I think it is fair and reasonable to decide to not give money to a company who is going to sponsor something you believe is ethically wrong.

I'm not sure how the OP meant their secret, so I'm in no way defending them. That said, I feel like there is a world of difference between refusing to support a company you deem unethical after careful research, and between having a knee-jerk response to hating a company after only knowing the barest indication of what they believe. Your comment could possibly encompass both views.

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well said. I support Dreamwidth despite being so far to the left that I'm falling off the edge of the galaxy, because (surprise!) that doesn't mean I don't have some views in common with some conservatives. In this case, freedom of speech and freedom of association are important to them and to me. If they started campaigning against universal healthcare, for example, I'd reconsider.

Re: 160.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
GUYS GUYS GUYS

Huge distinction: LIKE AND TOLERATE vs RESPECT

I had friends who were Mormons (I am an atheist) at an internship I did one summer. I LIKED them just the same. I was quite TOLERANT of their beliefs. But did I RESPECT them less? Yeah. It didn't really get in the way of things, though, because they were lovely people.

There is no reason you have to RESPECT beliefs that seem wrong or just nutso to you. All you have to do (you know what I mean) is tolerate them, and be willing to have relationships with people that espouse them.

TWO SEPARATE THINGS

Re: 160.

[identity profile] fireez.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
This. Also, you can respect someone's right to hold a belief without respecting the actual belief itself.

I sometimes wonder about people who say "I can only be friends with you if you agree with me on everything". I wonder just how many friends they have, and how many of those are lying to them to stay friends. Because hell, most of my friends and I don't see eye to eye on one or two issues. Doesn't mean they're not awesome people.

Re: 160.

[identity profile] sweetwater-tx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. It's key to always respect people AS PEOPLE, even if you disagree with their beliefs.

Besides, it's not like liberal means anything in this damn country (or at least it's government) anymore, regarding the U.S.
