Meh, I'm usually the first to call sexism, especially when it comes to KB, but I think the OP meant well. I read the secret as it being a shame that she has no children because there won't be an awesome mini-Bigelow that could go on and do something amazing. I didn't see any "OMG HOW CAN SHE DENY HER BIOLOGICAL IMPERATIVE TO HAVE CHILDREN" subtext.

Sorry, I disagree.

It's a stupid fucking secret. The OP said they almost cried when they learned that someone they don't personally know and aren't personally affected by doesn't have children.

That's creepy and it's none of their business. You don't see anyone going A BLOO BLOO BLOO THIS MALE DIRECTOR DOESN'T HAVE ANY CHILDREN A BLOO BLOO BLOO.

I don't buy it.

I was irritated by this secret, too. Not having children is a perfectly valid choice, and children are not tiny versions of their parents. They generally grow up to be their own people with their own interests.

Oh, I agree, that the crying thing is creepy, but I still don't see the "WHY DOES SHE HAVE NO CHILDREN" subtext. For all we know, the OP was similarly upset upon finding out that Quentin Tarantino has no kids, but found that out years ago. idk, I think it's just a terribly worded secret. I can't get too worked up over it.

(I don't care terribly one way or another about KB's maternal status, but I do think it would be great if she helped out with some sort of organization for young filmmakers or something similar. She has such a great point of view and would set a good example for girls and boys who want to get into film)

I completely agree. Yes.

I get equally upset about male directors/actors/writers whom I like who have no children to pass on their awesome genes to, so I really doubt that this secret was due to Bigelow being female.

Because men can always have childen. It's never too late for them.

Re: 148

She can't adopt? She can't teach others who show the promise of actually HAVING talent, instead of rolling the dice and assuming that her babies will be as genius as she is?

What's with people thinking that genetics alone transfer some magical talent and beauty to children? Pretty parents can have ugly-ass children. Genius parents can have morons for children.

And yes, men can produce genetic materials until late in life, but are they going to want to raise children when they're 60 or 70 years old? And even if those children did have the genes, who's to say they'd even want to follow in their parent's footsteps? Or be able to do anything talented without being instructed and taught well?

It's never too late for anyone. I don't know why everyone is so bound up in this idea that Kathryn Bigelow can only pass her talent on by giving birth to children who come directly from her own genes, which will UNDOUBTEDLY GUARANTEE that they have EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HER TALENTS.

Or gee, has it ever occurred to anyone that KB has chosen not to have children and enjoys a life free of those particular responsibilities? Assigning this "it's too late for her tragedy" to a childfree person makes a lot of unwarranted and rude assumptions about their life choices and circumstances.

I don't think it's tragic to not have children. I've chosen not to have them myself.

The fact though is that women have a biological deadline where we have to chose whether to have (bio-)kids or not. Men don't have this deadline, which is why you can look at George Clooney and still wonder whether he will have kids or not. My 48-year old cousin will be a father for the first time in a few weeks's time, for example.
