18. People like you have made it almost impossible for me to express myself without feeling terribly self-conscious. No, my icons aren't the prettiest, but they express what I feel and what I care about. The same is true for my art.

Criticism is one thing. Telling someone to stop altogether is something totally different, and it's pretty self-centered. Just because YOU don't like how they do something doesn't mean there's other people that do. It also doesn't mean that they don't enjoy it, and you have no right to tell them to stop.

And anyway, maybe they just need a nudge (or shove) in the right direction?

Oooh, puppies~! *cuddles* Seriously, I think that constructive criticism and letting people do their own thing (so long as it doesn't hurt someone else) are lost to most of society. >>' Art is about self-espression, not about "NO U'LL DO IT MAI WAY OR NO WAY AT ALL."

Not to mention artists aren't obligated to do what someone suggests. IMO all they're "obligated" to do is listen and give it a chance, but if it ends up not really working for them, they're not an ungrateful fanbrat if they decide to do things their way after all.

Exactly. And that's just being a generally nice person, which is always suggested. Because the world needs more nice people. :D

Which is kind of why I don't tell people what I think of their art in terms of criticisms and whatnot, because they just say that it is their way and gtfo. It kind of defeats the purpose of even trying to tell them that maybe they should try it another way, because regardless of the wording, I realize that it tends to come out that you absolutely hate their work.

It's more like I know that they have more potential than what they are showing, yet they're not improving at all. It's only those that don't seem to be getting any better, doing the status quo, people cheering them on for it so that it keeps up that just annoys the hell out of me. It is kind of one of those things that I want to shake them and say, you can do much better if you do it another way. The reason why I want them to stop is it seems like they've already stopped caring about what they're doing -- or rather the ideas of improving.

But like I said, the reason that this is a secret is because of the chicken shit answer of a) they're just going to say that this is what they do and they'll keep doing it however they feel like (which may or may not be improving at all) because I'm just asking them to do it my way; and b) their fans and friends will jump and claw my eyes out for even saying anything negative. *laughs* Which is kind of what happened, huh?

Well now that you explain more, it does make a bit more sense. I still can't say I agree on all points, but then again it's something of a sort spot for me. Still, thanks for the clarification. I get where you're coming from.

Well, to be fair it's not your job to make them live up to their potential; if they're comfortable where they are now they have every right to stay there. But yeah, I understand better now. And if they're being brats about it going GTFO I DO IT MY WAY UR JUST MEAN you have every right to be pissed.
