I'm new but someone did the service of filling me in and linking me to some posts and screen caps that where illuminating. Now I'm really hesitant to comment let alone post anything there or in the other S/U comm, which sucks because I want friends in the fandom (RL peeps don't get it) but I don't want to become accidentally notorious. :/

Well, if you do become ~notorious~ you can always bail on your current lj and create a new one, start fresh, etc.

That's a punk move. I'd rather they hate me upfront than hide in the fold.

I don't know what to tell you, as I ran away long ago. Though the Ship Wars Team Ashayam seems more chill from what I've seen, and there's some overlap there from the S/U comms, so maybe that's worth checking out? Or like OP said, ff.net?

Unless I'm mistaken and this competition is meant to roll on forever I have a problem with this because 1)it presumes to speak for everyone who ships the respective pairings and 2)no matter how 'sanitary' the fight is supposed to be, there will be sore losers. I mean, you'd think a group of real fans would know better. There was an episode of ST:TOS that dealt with this...people marching into a machine to die for the sake of a 'neat' war. All this will do is further divide instead of unite, but do you. Whatever floats your boat and finds your lost remote.

Agreed. There's already been some minor drama, and I'd hate to see all the bitterness this is going to make in the end.

It seems seriously pointless. Not the creative expression and creation but the competition because there are new people coming into the fandom everyday and since they weren't a part of this 'war' they won't recognise the ruling. In the end it will have accomplished nothing.

um. actually, if I could interject, for the minor pairing ships... it's actually brought a lot of the fandom together.

I mean, PikeOne, Chulu, Scokov, the fans for this pairing tended to be dispersed - or anon on the kinkmeme. With shipwars, everyone was brought together for a common goal.

I can understand this is not the same for larger ships, but I don't think it should be outright claimed as useless without that at least being noted :)

It's hard shipping relatively obscure pairings.

(K/S fan now, but have shipped plenty of obscure pairings in previous fandoms)

When I say it's divisive to the fandom, I'm speaking of it as a whole. I am glad it's brought the smaller groups together but it would have been nicer if it wasn't so that they could be united against something.

IMO it would have been better if it was set up like a fic festival instead of a "war". The competition aspect just seems to subtly promote vicious behavior :/

I've commented there often and it's not like that at all. At least not that I've found.

While the anon below is a little rough, I think it's a fair assessment of the community thus far. I'm a fan and I don't feel like I belong or that my voice would be welcome in my OTP com. I'm glad your experience has been a pleasant one, however.

I am too. It sucks because I have actually written S/U fics but I'm too nervous to post them there.

I'm not saying that I'm afraid my fic is racist, BTW. If I thought I'd written something racist I'd own up to it and be an adult. It just seems like they have a lot of conflict over ~everything~, and I hate being involved in confrontations.

I get that it's important to have a space for discussion, I really do. It's just... yeah. :-/

It honestly surprises me that there are even that many members left in the comm, although I guess some of them just keep it on their list but discontinue watching. Seriously, almost 2000 members and the comm is not even a year old is pretty damn impressive so there's definitely a lot of love for the pairing.

And I know from people on my F-list and that I see around that the pairing is really quite popular. I'd see people on my F-list posting stuff on the S/U comm last May-June all the time. Now I'm pretty sure we've all ditched the comm and just keep our love for the ship to ourselves and in our own private journals. I think if they still had a decent comm to work with, they'd totally be willing to participate.

There's another community that I am aware of

trek_het...but as I type this I wonder if you're quietly petitioning someone to make another S/U community.

I've looked through that comm and they're basically composed of the same people who dominate the regular S/U comm these days. It looks like it's entirely just race talk, which I don't mind when there's REALLY an issue behind it. But seriously, when there's posts about how Zoe Saldana wasn't included on a Vanity Fair cover because of racism (except she was in last year's same issue), that just turns me off. It's like, you know, I'm white and I just don't feel like I can participate in that kind of discussion without getting labeled a racist.

I really think it's too late for any kind of change. The only hope I'd say at this point is maybe when the sequel comes out and a new wave of people floods the place like at the beginning. I still follow the comm just in case one of the awesome writers from last year happens to come out of retirement but the fandom just isn't a fun place anymore. There aren't many people left who I actually feel like I'd want on my f-list or I have things in common with.
