I think the comm started out like that with a bunch of ZQ fangirls (which, you know, right after the movie came out, pretty much everyone was a ZQ fangirl). That was OK. It was when the race Nazis arrived that the comm turned soured.

It honestly surprises me that there are even that many members left in the comm, although I guess some of them just keep it on their list but discontinue watching. Seriously, almost 2000 members and the comm is not even a year old is pretty damn impressive so there's definitely a lot of love for the pairing.

And I know from people on my F-list and that I see around that the pairing is really quite popular. I'd see people on my F-list posting stuff on the S/U comm last May-June all the time. Now I'm pretty sure we've all ditched the comm and just keep our love for the ship to ourselves and in our own private journals. I think if they still had a decent comm to work with, they'd totally be willing to participate.

ill happily tell you why s/u comm is run down. its run by a bunch of angry black bitches who all by themselves perpetuate that stereotype.

there's a sock-puppet mod because the mods arent mature enough to be impartial and take personal responsibility. when members hate them, their feeewings are hurted.

these same mods feature quizzes that only 'people of color' should take because only they matter, nobody of a different color could possibly relate to 'their' black princess.

there is zero allowance for criticizing uhura as a character, zoe as an actress, or black females in sci-fi in general because they are all put on a pedastol and if you do, you're a fucking racist.

you don't like the pda on the transporter pad in front of every fucking body? your a RACIST! you cant stand to see a STRONG BAMF BLACK INTELLIGENT WELL SPOKEN BEAUTIFUL FINE REAL DEAL SISTA ruin your lilly white hero.

Even though you're, um, kind of right, you're making it sound like an attempt at racial awareness was the issue, when really it was bullying EVERY FUCKING BODY into no longer feeling like the pairing was their own to love and enjoy and develop and discuss, and being really and unnecessarily mean and nasty while doing so (OMG THE TONE ARGUMENT).

I've been watching and commenting on that comm for a while now and I don't see it the same way at all. There's been some heated debate but it sure didn't come cross like that to me.

People do get excited sometimes but nothing like what you're making it out to be.

The comm was fine when it was just herm_weasley running the place (that girl is awesome) but now it seems like even though she's still a mod, even she pretty avoids that place other than to post the weekly whatever.

Honestly, it feels like if you're white or hell, just NOT black, you don't get to say anything.

It kind of pains me to see a comm for a pairing I really like totally self-destructing and driving away all the fans. Granted the ST fandom as a whole is kind of crazy but at least the shippers are crazy TOWARD other shippers, not within their own group.

Some of those people are perfectly fine with shipping Uhura with the whole damn bridge crew (look how many times they call for Uhura getting a 'harem') but if you ship Spock with someone who isn't Uhura, then it's OMG YOU ARE RACIST.

The OP is totally right. Around last summer, it was really fun, had a lot of cool people posting, and for a few months produced a lot of good fics. That place is now almost exclusively a black feminist's club. I know quite a few people who still ship the pairing to their death but do not go near that comm anymore.

I kind of feel bad for one of the moderators there who actually started the comm last year cause it started out as such a cool place and it got completely taken over certain people.

That place is unbearable.

I totally ship Spock/Uhura but part of me actually wants the sequel to throw Spock together with a hot blond girl like Chapel just to see those people's heads explode.

It seems a lot of 'interracial' ships have similar issues of overplaying the race card for the sake of making a statement about how they're so 'under-represented'.
