you did not just call a woman a 'chick'.

Right, because a woman using a colloquial term for women is the same thing as somebody using racist language (intentional or otherwise) in a hateful secret.

If you are going to throw a fit about someone not knowing that a common colloquialism is used as a racist term by some people, you had better be throwing a fit about a commonly known sexist term being thrown around like it's perfectly okay.

Oh my gosh, will you please look up the statement before jumping to conclusions? The term "call a spade a spade" had NOTHING, I repeat to your empty skull, NOTHING, to do with race. It means, and hey I looked up the exact definition for you: "to speak honestly and directly about a topic, specifically topics that others may avoid speaking about due to their sensitivity or embarrassing nature." So if you are no so enlightened which I should hope you would be, you would know that the OP was referring to the fact that people should not avoid the fact that she is severely overweight. NOT that she is black. If you believed that people were trying to say that she is not black which is what you were pushing to, then you need a reality check.

Just because it's a colloquialism, doesn't mean that it's not offensive to some women, and harmful to society's view of women in general. Women are commonly referred to in these animal terms, such as "chick", "[sex] kitten", or"bitch", and in using the animal terms, women are reduced to sub-human status, which is naturally far from promoting gender equality. Moreover, the animal terms used towards females are chosen based on the negative aspects, or objectifiable aspects of women's perceived characters or attributes. A chick is weak, a baby, all fluffy and incapable of surviving on its own; a bitch refers to readiness for sex, as if that's all the woman's good for; sex kitten is almost a perfect fusion of the two! Alluring, yet weak and helpless... all indicate a woman's supposed need for a man in some way. On the other hand, if you look at the animal terms for men - which are less abundant in the first place - they refer to positives like strength and sexual prowess; things like "stallion" or "stud".

The double standards are clear, and many women now find them unacceptable, as they divide the genders up into the strong and weak, or the entitled and non-entitled, just as racist language (which wasn't actually being used here in the first place) is unacceptable for dividing races up in the same way. Society as a whole may not feel this way about sexist words yet, but hopefully that day is on its way, and any elitist, divisive language will be considered as bad as any other.
