Re: 147
You're siding with someone who is using words that are frequently used to demean POCs who achieve something, used to accuse their success of being falsely manufactured and not deserved. Those words are used to imply that said POC couldn't possibly have accomplished it on their own.
You might have some form of ration behind what you're saying, but when you stand next to a person using terms that are loaded with a history of use to demean people, you look an awful lot like you're standing up for a bigot.
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-23 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)And if the media does indeed tiptoe around any criticism of POCs (even when it's a health concern) then no wonder they have to deal with accusations about falsely manufactured success. I think discussing/confronting the issue brought up here's one way to address that problem.
Re: 147
Do you think she's unaware of her body size? Whatever "encouragement" she's getting for her size probably doesn't even remotely CLOSE to balancing out the pressure she's been put under from all quarters, both personally directed at her and from the media in general to fat people in general, to lose weight over the course of her life. Seriously. Besides, you know what? Her weight? Nobody's business but her own. Her weight is not an "issue" that needs to be "addressed" by people in general.
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)I've been overweight all my life and I can't walk home from work without some idiot screaming a hurtful name or other from his car when they see me.
Do people know the kind of damage that does to a person?
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-23 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)Many terrible -isms comes in all sizes, shapes, genders, and yes, colors.
Plus, "Reverse racism FTW" came across as completely sarcastic to me. I wouldn't be agreeing with something like that if I thought the original commenter was serious.
Re: 147
Well, your opinion is great but there are people out there who actually make a study of prejudice. You could try reading up about it on this thing we call the internet.
Re: 147
Yes, at least in most countries today.
Racism is prejudice + power.
Re: 147
No matter who is doing it, it's racism. There's no such thing as 'reverse' racism. That gives the impression that it's negative racism (like a negative number). Wouldn't that just be NON-racism?
Onto the core of the matter: I agree that the term is used to demean minorities or because they grow suspicious. I'm not discussing the race here, so much as the PCness. Simply put, when talking about or describing someone who falls in the minority group, people will tiptoe and be extra PC about what they say. Even when they aren't talking about the skin color or race, it's like people are SO scared they'll upset an entire culture that they're afraid to say anything.
That's just a fact. Personally, I think political-correctness at all is just another form of Newspeak and therefore should be abolished no matter who or what the hell you're saying. You're going to upset SOMEBODY no matter what you do (example, the more PC someone is, the more upset I am) so why even try to walk on eggshells? I'm not saying be antagonistic and insulting, throwing out racial slurs and such. Just be honest.
Re: 147
If a white person in america is somehow being prejudiced against, by an academic definition of racism, they are not being a victim of racism. Racism is not the act of a single bigot; it's a societal force, an institution.
Trying to be conscientious and not manage to seriously offend and genuinely hurt people isn't the same as stifling your own speech. It's not honesty to not care about whether or not you hurt someone's feelings with your words. It's being an asshole, at the very least. And hey, some people are happy as assholes.
But personally, I like to remember that I didn't like it when male customers who called into my tech support asked me for a "real tech support agent" when I picked up the phone because I have a female voice and name. I sure don't like hearing that queer people are degenerate perverts. And neither of those examples are hurtful because they're "honest" - they're hurtful because they're kicking someone who is already down and knows they are. They're a reminder that in the eyes of someone with more privilege, my feelings not only don't deserve to be watched out for, you get bonus points if you get skidmarks when you run them over for no reason other than you can.
When people genuinely moderate their speech to consider that they might be contributing to marginalizing people who are already marginalized by society in some way, they aren't trying to be dishonest. They're remembering that the words they're avoiding using, the implications they're trying to keep out of their speech are loaded with meanings that can hurt someone - and can't hurt them.
But if being an asshole works for you, hey. Good thing for you that you have the privilege that lets that be an option.
Re: 147
I never said anything about your sexual preference, so get off your damn soapbox. You'll never hear me call you a degenerate pervert because I don't think you are. Hell, even my religion supports homosexuality. It seems to me you've been burned by people judging and I'm sorry for you. But I didn't do it so don't take shit out on me.
There's a difference between PC and politeness. Politeness is not actively trying to hurt someone's feelings. Political Correctness is using round-about words and terms to describe the same thing because for some fucking reason, the quicker, easier way to say it is somehow wrong. Example, it's not PC to say, 'I fucked that chick.' It IS PC to say, 'I slept with that woman.' Why not call things as they are? Kristie Alley isn't big-boned, she's fat. Lindsay Lohan isn't 'thin', she's anorexic (or bullimic. Or just an addict).
Re: 147
Laughing my ass OFF.
lol yeah. People are ALWAYS trying REAL HARD to preserve the feelings of PoC.
Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 02:59 am (UTC)(link)Re: 147
Beyond that I'm not sure what your point is. Because MY point was that it was laughable that people who have to work really hard just not to be offensive douchebags are not doing so out of a desire to protect the feelings of PoC. No. They're doing it so other people won't think they're racist.
And those are the people who bother to try in the first place.
