Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that she's a teenager who is new to the game and likely will never be cast as anything significant again, and Kate Winslet is both a woman and old hat, and thus much fairer game in their eyes?

Because Kate Winslet is the only slender white woman who is called chubby, and Gabourey Sidibe is the only woman of color whose size is treated as less of an issue.

Yes, the original "reverse racism" comment was inappropriate and uncalled for. That does not mean that there isn't a valid point to be made about the way the media treats white women and women of color with regard to weight/body shape. Jessica Simpson is fat, but Queen Latifa is shapely? There are certainly different standards being applied.

In response to the original secret, though: I think Gabby Sidibe is a great role model for young women in general. She is happy, funny, talented, successful, and seems to have a really healthy self-image. That's great. All young women should strive for those goals. I wouldn't encourage any young women (whether they are her size or not) to *not* lead a healthy lifestyle because they think she is unhealthy but happy, etc. However, I don't think her size is the only aspect of her person worth noting.

Well, yeah. The different standards is that white women are expected to be as attractive as possible whereas black women have already been written off by society's racist standards of beauty.

Think about this: Reverse the bodies and careers of Kate Winslet and Gabourey Sidibe.

Do you think that Kate Winslet with Gabourey Sidibe's body would have a better chance at getting big and relevant roles after being in Precious?

I've been thinking about this, and I honestly have no idea. I don't know what that says about me and my views about race/society/privelidge/the entertainment industry, but I think both crazy talented and that should count for a hell of a lot more than body size.
