(Anonymous) 2010-03-23 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)Yes, the original "reverse racism" comment was inappropriate and uncalled for. That does not mean that there isn't a valid point to be made about the way the media treats white women and women of color with regard to weight/body shape. Jessica Simpson is fat, but Queen Latifa is shapely? There are certainly different standards being applied.
In response to the original secret, though: I think Gabby Sidibe is a great role model for young women in general. She is happy, funny, talented, successful, and seems to have a really healthy self-image. That's great. All young women should strive for those goals. I wouldn't encourage any young women (whether they are her size or not) to *not* lead a healthy lifestyle because they think she is unhealthy but happy, etc. However, I don't think her size is the only aspect of her person worth noting.

Well, yeah. The different standards is that white women are expected to be as attractive as possible whereas black women have already been written off by society's racist standards of beauty.
