I have to agree with this person, and even go so far as to say that not all Americans will know what you're talking about. I certainly didn't know it was a racial slur. America's a big place, and what might be offensive in one section of the country is completely unheard of elsewhere. I know I've used terminology that utterly confused friends of mine on the Coasts before.

(Though, it's not just Americans who do this. I read an article a few years ago where British fans of Tiger Woods flipped out because he said he was playing like a spaz. Spaz, at least in my section of the US, is a general term for someone who's being hyper and unfocused. Apparently it's really offensive in parts of Britain, though, and he had to issue a huge apology.)

Heh, like Americans being all giggly about "The Spy Who Shagged Me" while British people were all "WTF did they call that movie?"

I'll admit my American bias. Still, it looked freaky in such a secret and immediately caught my attention. It must not be as common as I'd thought. :)

"spaz" is offensive because it comes from the word "spastic" and it's a derogatory term for people with Cerebral palsy. If he said he played like a "tard" would everything had been a-ok?

I had to think about it before I got what they're talking about, and I'll be damned if I don't feel like I'm pretty well versed in slurs in America, because I didn't learn it on the internet with a handy dandy internet dictionary to tell me what I ought to associate with a certain word, I learned that shit from hearing it from actual racist people in the American south (well, before they died, and then there's that whole 'well, I grew up in that time period so even though I don't hate *insert race* I still use it every now and then' commentary to work with...no seriously, it's the most bizarre excuse ever), and I've maybe heard it once. I don't really remember it, if I have.
