Iiii cannot stand Leonard. He just seems like a whiny brat. But I also cannot stand the entire concept of TBBT. I don't find it funny. I find it cruel and mocking and I'm baffled how most of my nerd friends find them making fun of them to be funny. I find it insulting.

But, I also don't watch the show. However, I have watched a handful of episodes, and I quite enjoy Sheldon, Raj and Howard. Leonard has moments, but I find him generally annoying. I think it's the fact that how annoying he is is rarely remarked on in the show that really bothers me. Like, if people were constantly rolling their eyes at him and snubbing him like would happen in the real world, I wouldn't mind. But instead it's made out that he's the cool, hip one. Mostly he's a douche that deserves to be punched in the face.

I'd be far more into the show if Howard and Raj were the main characters and Leonard just popped up for a handful of minutes every day.

I suspect the bashing comes about so strong because of the STRONG (unwarranted, IMO) love for him that other fans get. Like I said, I'm not in TBBT fandom, but I have been in fandoms where this has happened. The louder the (unjustly, imo) fans love a character that I don't think deserves that degree of love, the louder I will be about hating him, or pointing out all his many, many flaws that the blind fangirls seem to have missed.

However, I generally don't character bash in fic. I find that just to be petty and immature, and if I'm into another character more, I'd rather write about that character being awesome than about the character I don't like being a dumbass.
