THIS. I LIKE THIS COMMENT.

Seriously. Fellow white people, stop being so embarrassing. Being told that some category of person has it a little worse than your category of person shouldn't prompt you into throwing a giant whinefit about how OMG MY LYFE IS THE WURST EVAR HDU REVERSE RACISUM. It makes you sound about twelve years old.

Zimbabwe.

Re: 147

My family comes from Zimbabwe (we're white). It's not actually about race there - that's an excuse for power grabs by Mugabe and his cronies, and they're destroying far more black people than white. Every white farm is worked by black families, who are being murdered and displaced just as ruthlessly.

Besides, do five minutes of research and you'll find which race set up the whole colonialist problem of land ownership, semi-slavery and wholesale displacement (hint: they're not black).

Re: 147

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
You're not very good with world history, huh. There have been plenty of white people who were oppressed because of their race.

Re: 147

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
They've almost all been oppressed by other white people. Systemic racism isn't white people in Japanese POW camps for a few years (strangely enough, it is Korean comfort women because that is part of ongoing Japanese racism against Koreans over centuries) nor, I don't know what else because I cannot think of a case where there has been systematic long term power differentials and oppression of white people by nonwhite people.

Thank you for your well-thought-out and nuanced words. :)

I don't really see what difference it makes, but I'm interested in hearing an explanation if you don't mind educating me. Oppression is less legitimate if it comes from people whose skin tone is similar to yours?

Re: 147

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's one of the most blanket, ignorant statements I've ever had the not-pleasure of reading.

You should try telling that to any of the Irish who were in the U.S from the 1860's to the 1930's who regularly saw signs in factory windows that said 'NINA' (No Irish Need Apply) whenever they tried to get some sort of job to support their families. Oh, and that strange little thing that occured in the late 1930's and early 1940's called the Holocaust? Apparently, that doesn't count either (since I'm assuming you are including Europeans in your definiton of 'white').

NotIrish/Jewish!Anon agrees that there is no such thing as 'reverse racism,' but making blatantly wrong generalizations such as "whites have never experienced racism EVAR" is just as damaging.

Also, in before someone cries 'racist!'-- this anon is perfectly aware of the crimes and racism committed against African Americans and is a staunch defender against said transgressions.

Lies. There is no history outside of America.

Jewish people were not considered white at the time of the Holocaust, but thanks for playing.

Irish people? Oppressed by other white people. And considered of a lesser ethnicity.

Seriously, you fucking think the Holocaust happened to Jews because people thought they were white? Fucking seriously?

And that's not racism how?

You're asking if racism is different from ethnocentrism and religious discrimination?

Uh. Yeah?

Re: 147

Oppressed by other white people and considered of a lesser ethnicity and more severely discriminated against on the basis of class and religion. Next.

Re: 147

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Systematic discrimination based on ethnicity is, under United Nations conventions, considered more or less the same thing as racial discrimination. It's not in clear-cut terms. You have your own definition of racism, but it comes in many forms and can be described in many ways. Clearly this isn't the same thing as being oppressed by people of a different race, but it can't be written off entirely.

Just my opinion. No need for snark.

Re: 147

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Under further consideration, I concede that I understand the difference between these different concepts, but I'm still hesitant to write it off because I feel really strongly about the issue and I still see it as discrimination against an ethnic group. It's giving me a lot of food for thought.

Why'd you delete your original post, out of curiosity?

Re: 147

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't. That's the second comment of mind that disappeared. But my connection's being iffy and lj's been weird for me for days. IDK.

Personally, I get more than a little annoyed when people compare the history of Irish-Americans to the history of PoC in America, because I don't find them remotely comparable in scale, severity, or endurance, and I find the comparison by definition tenuous at best.

Seriously. You've got Irish and East Asian people working across the country as manual laborers. Guess who gets assimilated into society first.

Wanna know when Italians started to be considered white? When Puerto Ricans started showing up.

Re: 147

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Wanna know when Italians started to be considered white? When Puerto Ricans started showing up."

And this means that the discrimination Italians faced up until that point was retroactively cancelled?

I defy anyone to look at or read any depictions of Irish in US media in the late 1800s and still say Irish people didn't experience racism. In fact, here (http://i41.tinypic.com/2qwde9s.jpg) is a direct comparison of black and Irish stereotypes. They both seem pretty bad to me.
