African American women have the highest rates of being overweight or obese compared to other groups in the U.S. About four out of five African American women are overweight or obese.
Obviously environmental factors come into play here, otherwise it wouldn't make any sense for African Americans to be fatter than other groups of people, if genetics alone dictated a person's weight.
Nobody in this thread has addressed the fact that poverty disproportionately affects African-Americans, which contributes to higher rates of obesity (also, let's face it, some traditional African-American diets are not that healthy). Another thing most people don't notice is how poor neighborhoods tend to have less grocery stores than higher-income neighborhoods, which restricts food choices.
Of course, from the comments in this thread you'd think that food has no bearing on how fat a person is, which, of course, is bullshit. Yes, genetics do greatly contribute to how fat or skinny a person is, but diet/lifestyle definitely affects a person's weight.
Significant obesity is definitely a major health risk.
