I agree to a point. I still think she's a beautiful person and a fabulous actress, but people need to stop glorifying her weight. I'm not saying she should be a size 2, but it's not healthy to be that big, no matter how you slice it. Keeping on pounds like that is murder on your heart and joints.

1) Politically correct as it may be, people are being polite and considerate. Somehow, I doubt these concepts resonate with you.

2) Not a role model? She's a plus-sized actress who landed a role that landed her an Oscar nomination. No one's asking girls to start chowing down on McDonald's, but hell yes, she is a role model for people who feel their weight hinders success.

I haven't seen this movie and I don't intend to, and I wasn't rooting for her to win the Oscar, but she definitely deserves props for combating the traditional Hollywood look and doing it well. I don't think her size is healthy, by any means, and I doubt she does, either. But she is living a real Cinderella story, and I can't help but applaud people who turn conventions on their head and prove you don't have to be a model to be successful.

Other than the OP of yesterday's secret, I haven't heard anyone say that her weight is healthy, or that little girls should strive to look like her. The fact is that many people in this country are overweight and some of those people are also incredibly talented. For a long time fat people (particularly women) have been locked out of the entertainment industry, even if they're very good; having one who broke through, who became famous anyway is impressive.

Frankly, I think it's stupid to care about her weight one way or the other. She's a wonderful actress and, based on her interviews, an intelligent, funny person. Anyone who focuses on what she looks like is missing the whole point.

How is she not a good role model? Being a good role model is not about looks. The girl has a degree in psychology and she got into the business for the right reasons unlike most actresses these days.

*shudder! gasp!* God forbid she doesn't fit into your view of how a woman should look. Guess what, sweetheart? It's possible to be fat and beautiful! Novel concept, I know! And guess what else? Her weight has nothing to do with her talent! Does she not deserve applause and acclaim just because she wear plus-size clothing? Her health is her business, and her's alone. All we should care about is her performance. Period.

Oh, and BTW: Unfortunate word-usage there, OP. You must be kind of young to not know that word is a racial slur. Unless, of course, you meant it to be that way. In which case, your argument is invalid by reason of race!fail.

So I guess that's three things she is that you'll never be.

As for all the 'OH MY GOD! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!' hand-wringing about her being an unhealthy role model, I wonder if the same people stress about the example set by actors who are underweight, heavy smokers, drinkers, drug-abusers or sexually promiscuous? They're all health risks too. Or is it just the FAT thing?

do you know her personally? because her weight could well be natural and she could well be healthy. that kind of thing differs from person to person. some people can't lose weight no matter how hard they try, just as some people can't gain weight no matter how hard they try. plenty of extremely fat and extremely skinny people are perfectly healthy, and their weight isn't something they can help. maybe you shouldn't judge people for that kind of thing, or, for that matter, the people they find inspiring.

Let's be honest here, she's fat. And that's not a bad thing. As long as someone's healthy and comfortable with themselves I don't care what they look like unless I'm fucking them. People should be role models/inspirations for what they do and not what they look like anyways.

People do seem to be trying a bit too hard, but there's something to be said with being happy with yourself regardless of size or how 'perfect' you are. And isn't she a good role model because she's friendly and kind and a nice person who doesn't let people's mean comments get to her? I'll admit that we have an obesity problem in this country and people need to take better care of themselves, etc., but hopefully people don't just have role models based on their appearance.

I'm not going to reply anonymously here since I don't care if everyone know how I feel on the subject. I don't care what weight any person on the planet is...that's your business and if it's not healthy, I'm going to assume that you are intelligent enough to figure that out and if you're okay with it, fine by me. Same goes for drugs, alcohol whatever. And yes, it is true that there are larger people who are healthy (even though obviously, being obese does put strain on internal organs and blood pressure and all this, but I'm not a doctor and I'm not going to say exactly how big that effect is, because I truly don't know. However, I'm at risk for heart problems because it runs in my family and has nothing to do with weight...point is, it doesn't really matter what the "cause" is).

HOWEVER. I hate, hate, hate the fact that people are often so quick to say that larger people are more "real" and defend their health and so forth, when almost every post about someone who is unnaturally skinny is all about "eat a damn cheeseburger", etc. Women (and men) come in ALL sizes. And ALL sizes are capable of being healthy and comfortable with themselves. As someone who is naturally skinny and gets regularly accused of being anorexic, I sympathize with Gabourey. It's extremely hard on your self esteem to go through ANY kind of weight problems, and the fact that she is happy with herself is wonderful. I'm trying to gain weight, but I still try to look positively at myself the way I am NOW. And I eat a hell of a lot of food every day and still don't gain much...she could be trying to lose weight and having just as much trouble.
So while Gaby's weight may not be something to aspire to, her attitude is (minus some of the sassyness lol ;) ).

Sorry for the tl;dr and I know most of this makes no sense :\

Hmm, I'm not sure her weight is exactly healthy, but it all comes down to whether she's happy or not. It's her life, and no one has a right to judge.

Joining the chorus for the comments on "would you prefer your little girl look up to Lindsey Lohan?" There's more to being a role model than whether the person is a healthy weight or not. And I'll take people being overly PC about this over people bashing her for having the nerve to be fat and still make it in the entertainment world, kthx.
