yeah, because I'm obliged to know every insult ever used in your country. Get real. Everybody agrees that you should apologize if you inadvertently insult someone but YOU'RE NOT RACIST FOR USING A WORD YOU NEVER KNEW WAS AN INSULT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

And don't tell me to "EDUCATE YOURSELF DDD:" because I don't plan on moving to the US anytime soon so I don't plan to spend my life learning about insults that I will never hear, use or care about because here? A spade is just a fucking spade.

I'll be careful around americans with it now but please stop thinking that everyone on the internet automatically knows what colloquialism might offend you.

I agree with the idea of your comment. But please stop generalizing America, I know we do it to other people all the time, but I hope I'm not chauvinistic enough to think that makes it right. Among other things America is fucking huge, and with a lot of different cultures and history and, shocker, people of different opinions (although I know our political system does not adequately express this).

I didn't mean that all Americans did this, I mean that the only ones (in all of the fandom meta I've read, anyway) that expect the whole wide word to naturally adhere to their PC standards, regardless of where they come from, are Americans. And I'm certainly sorry if I offended you, I didn't mean that either.

The problem is the every single wank involving race has at least someone getting piled on because they didn't know that a certain turn of phrase or behaviour was considered racist. Black people do NOT provide the greatest racial tension in most of Europe, for example. And for some reason, I never saw anyone getting dog-piled by Brits for saying something unintentionally culturally insensitive about Indians or Pakistanis. I say "Black" to a black person and it's all right, I don't have to say "African-European" because they'd laugh in my face and never let me live it down if I did.

Intellectually I get why Americans are walking on PC eggshells around African-Americans. Emotionally? I'm sorry, but I'm not naturally going to be as sensitive about it as you are. We never had slavery here, we don't have that guilt hanging around our neck. And right now? The big racial tension around here is about Moroccans, because that's our greatest immigrant group. Black people? Not so much.

So no, sorry, being oversensitive about African-Americans is an exclusively American problem. I know that you don't all assume that everyone on the 'net should know about everyone of your quirks. But there is a strong general tendency around here to reply to "I didn't know about this, I'm not from the US" with "Well you should have just educated yourself you racist overerprivileged asshole". Which is just very entitled in believing you're the center of the frekin' universe.

the brits DID have slaves ...

We never had slavery here ...

Uhhhh, if you're from Britain, this statement is incorrect. King Charles the II allowed for the Brits to [re]enter the slave trade in the late 1600s. They then abolished slavery a full 56 years before the Americans did [1807]. But there were slaves in Europe. The fact that the cane fields were across the Atlantic doesn't mean there weren't slaves wandering about Europe. I don't know about the rest of Europe, and their slavery policies, but yes, Britain had slaves.

Nope, not from Britain just used it as an example of an english-speaking country with people that might get offended by english words that mean absolutely nothing to the rest of us.

Every country has a taint. No one in Europe is ever truely innocent of colonization but the problems are different than in the US. because a) no country here consistently spans an entire continent (except Russia but I know even less about Russia than about the US so I don't feel free to comment) and so needed to sustain itself by agriculture spanning half a continent and manned by slaves (not since the roman empire, anyway) and b) we never had huge fields with slaves here. The atrocities were generally committed in the colonies rather than in the countries. Our hang-ups have a lot more to do with barging in on other countries' business. There's STILL a huge debate here every single time the country wants to sent soldiers into an African country as part of a UN peacekeeping force. The public feels very uneasy about this because there's still lingering guilt over colonization. We probably feel more uneasy about it than the country that's waiting for the UN to help them but you can't help that.

Which is to say no, I still am not as sensitive about American history and insults and discrimination because they. are. different. The entire world doesn't need to feel your guilt to validate you, we have a different cross to bear and we really don't want to bear yours too.

Re: the brits DID have slaves ...

(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, they are different. But the end of slavery in the British colonies was done, in part, by a former slave. That's all.

No-one ever said I was an American, I'm just pointing out the history of slavery that a lot of AMERICANS don't want to remember either. I'm not asking your precious snowflake self to bare any crosses that aren't yours, or validate anything of me. Just seeking to validate some history here. That's all.

The end of slavery in Britain and the British colonies is probably one of the coolest history stories [a population started the movement using sugar. That's just pretty aweosome] that more people should know about.

But your assuming all Americans are over-sensitive about African Americans from a few anon people on the internet. I mean African Americans is a phrase that if I actually used to a black person in my area I'd probably get laughed out of the room. I grew up in an area of the US where racism (against blacks at any rate) is mostly, now, just a by product of classism and preconceptions of society that are going to take awhile to grow out of, but there is very little malice or hate just socialization unfortunately. And it is a place where I've had very little contact with racism that I know is prevalent in some other regions.

And I have no guilt over slavery, I'm not gonna feel guilty about it because I can only think of one side of my family that was even here when slavery was occurring. It is never something I partook in, and the accident of my birth making me white is what I am, I'm not going to apologize about it. You're assuming a lot of things from a few overly PC dicks that hang around here. And yes they're loud, but obnoxious people often are the loudest.
