Re: 147
(Anonymous) 2010-03-24 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)I don't think that the choice to sit on the couch, stuff your face with high fat garbage, not exercise and generally be a sloth is a "moral choice" per se. It's a lifestyle choice. And I am not saying that this is the case with this actress.
I am also not saying that she, or anyone, should be treated with anything less than respect or kindness. What I AM saying, and what you seem to be deliberately bypassing, is that the media is making her their darling of the moment, and giving the unhealthy message that because she is so talented and all, and she is so positive about herself, that her weight is not a genuine problem health wise. It is much like how they are with comedians who are dangerously overweight (Chris Farley comes to mind). But Gaby's fans are young girls, many of whom are impressionable and sadly many are obese. The message should not be that her weight doesn't matter. It should be that she is awesome and amazing, while recognizing that being that morbidly obese is not healthy.
And while some people can eat crap, never exercise and not have a problem, the reality is that African Americans are the fastest growing demographic in Diabetes rates, and morbidity from it. Young girls in that group are especially prone to the dangerous effects. This is a problem, in terms of health care costs, as well as human loss.
So be as defensive as you like. But with health care costs on the rise, and the state of the economy, people have every right to express their concerns about behavior that is dangerous and utterly preventable. I'm not singling out obesity. I feel the same way about dangerous drivers, drinking, drug abuse, people not taking proper care of their children, people who let their pit bulls roam the neighborhood unleashed, people who keep handguns in the house loaded with small kids, people who don't use car seats, people who breed indiscriminately with four or five kids they can't afford and people who randomly engage in unsafe sexual practices without any thought of consequence.
If that makes me some kind of big meanie...too bad.
Re: 147
I'm disagreeing with the fact that you seem to be putting people who are obese in a different category than people who play sports or engage in other hobbies that can cause injury, people who choose to have children, etc. when many of those people also need health care for a choice they have made. You may see their choices as more "admirable" than someone who has decided that they're happier eating and living how they want to, but that's completely subjective. So why are you under the impression that I'm being "defensive," simply for disagreeing with you?
If is, in fact, a "darling of the moment," it's because she was in a good movie where she gave an impressive performance. Some publications have praised her for it, and for having the courage to enter the public eye even though she does not fit the "accepted" standards of beauty. I have never once seen an article about her than denies obesity can cause health problems. Is she not worthy of being praised publicly because of her perceived imperfections? Do you think that the media should ignore and shun her because she is obese? Do you honestly think, with the hundreds articles and studies about the dangers of obesity published every year, American teenagers will be unaware of them just because some articles commending Gabourey Sidibe for her talent have also been published?
