Re: 147
So for example, a woman going "All men are pigs" is just as sexist as a man going "All women are cunts"-- it's just less unacceptable from a social standpoint when it's a woman making negative generalizations of the opposite sex than a man because, as another poster said here, she doesn't have the power and authority.
And by the same token, a black person (or a South Asian, or aboriginal, or anyone else) making derogatory statements about another person based on their racial profile would be just as racist (although, again, it probably wouldn't be seen as so completely unacceptable, and may even be excused as justifiable given world history) as a white person doing it.
Racism is unfairly making derogatory statements against a person or group of people based on their race, isn't it? Or is it only when white people say something bad about people of other races? And if that's the case, what is it called when a non-Caucasian does it?
Don't get me wrong, I abhor racism in any flavour and I always have. And, yes, I probably suffer from "White privilege". Certainly the one time I tried to hail a cab in the street it stopped for me. And no, I haven't experienced what it's like for all of society telling me that I'm worth somehow less than another person simply because of some genetic factor beyond my control. But I've been mocked, as a child, because my hair was blonde instead of black; I have been assumed to be an idiot who could not possibly understand machinery as complicated as a brake pad because I'm female; and I have been deluged with a society that insists that everything MUST revolve around sex so if you don't, then you are either damaged or a freak, or just don't exist. Not trying to compare pain, here, just saying that I may have had at least a taste of what others go through on a daily basis.
Probably tmi and unrelated, but in before "OMG white privilege you couldn't possibly have a clue" etc etc, you know? :-)
SO anyway, am I just misinformed about the definition of racism? Because if it's something that only white people can be racist (or whatever is the dominant group in that particular area) then I would like to be corrected so I don't misapply terms out of ignorance.
Re: 147
Like, a white person being mocked growing up in an all-black neighbourhood is an example of prejudice and bigotry, but that white person will still reap the benefits of their white privilege later on and will not, for their race, be denied jobs or face the myriad of other discriminations in the larger scheme based on their race.
In order to be racist, one must possess both privilege (being white) and power (which in the West, is associated with being white). And power is a societal/institutional concept, not an individual one.
Race theory can seem complex, but some excellent comms here on LJ for figuring out terminology and what is and is not use/abuse of privilege are
