Never meet your heroes...or at least the actors you like.

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's smart, OP. I've learned that the hard way.

same.

Alan Rickman's a total douche IRL.

[identity profile] a-wittyusername.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I managed to get into something he was doing at TriBeCa a few years ago, and he was being really snippy with anyone who asked for an autograph, and when some elementary school teacher asked him to autograph a picture of himself as Snape for her classroom, he said "I don't do Potter" and brushed her aside.

I mean, he could have just been having a really bad day because it was the premier of Nobel Son, and it was an absolutely shitty movie, but all the other cast members were awesome, and nice, and then there was Alan Rickman being a douche.

I still think he's a brilliant actor though. Just...not a nice person.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, that's shitty. Sounds like how he acted in-character during Galaxy Quest. :/ Kind of ironic.

Reminds me of the Sean Astin Q&A panel I attended a couple years ago at a con. Instead of taking questions, he talked for 45 minutes straight about random things he assumed people would ask... but he talked about anything OTHER than LOTR. The Goonies, the possibility of a Goonies sequel, Rudy, fucking 50 First Dates, but not one mention of LOTR. I get that he's probably done publicity for so many years and I think he wrote a book about his experiences but ffs, people weren't showing up to see him because he was in the Goonies.

lol maybe he was practising for Snape

He is? :(

Dude, I hate you a little bit right now. I'm going to pretend I didn't even see that. D=

I'm so sad to hear that.... and now I'm going to forget that I read that.

On a similar note, I have it on good authority that Denzel Washington is a douche as well.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Spill! I'm ever so nosy.

[identity profile] sriracha-grrl.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my relatives is an actor (he's not uberfamous or anything but he's got a decent resume... I don't want to say specifics but he's been on a lot well known movies and tv shows, so it's not like he asked for hand outs or something lol). He's seen Denzel a couple of times at events and was treated with an attitude that he couldn't make sense of both times. Like he was dirt, beneath him. The first time he just thought the interaction was weird and gave DW the benefit of the doubt, but after seeing him again, it was clear that DW has no love him. Not that interesting a story, I'm afraid. :)

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard similar things about Taye Diggs from a high school friend. Her young twin relatives (nieces, I think?) alternatively played his baby daughter in the TV show "Kevin Hill," so she bumped into him a lot. Just an arrogant douche.

[identity profile] sriracha-grrl.livejournal.com 2010-03-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard that about Taye Diggs as well from people who are deep into the Broadway musical scene.

When my relative stayed with us for a family reunion, we asked him about a ton of celebs. He was tight-lipped... he's a bit older and doesn't really let things like the DW encounter bother him. He laughs it off. But he did say Anthony Hopkins, Will Smith, and Jada Pinkett-Smith were nice people, which surprised me for some reason. I really wanted to hate Will Smith. haha

[identity profile] sriracha-grrl.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I can still watch movies with Denzel though. Perhaps douche is too strong a word? Snobby toward other actors that he deems not worthy of his kindness?

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Holier-than-thou, perhaps?

[identity profile] sriracha-grrl.livejournal.com 2010-03-25 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
YES! That's the perfect descriptive word. At the time I was so surprised because he always comes across as likeable and all smiles in his interviews, but I guess it depends on who you are. :/

They filmed part of Crimson Tide where I worked. Gene Hackman was standing in front of one building, chatting with everyone and signing anything people handed him. Across the lawn and sitting in a director's chair right in the middle of the sidewalk was Denzel Washington. Just sitting there. Two youngish people (early 20's maybe) asked for his autograph and he went off on them. Absolutely exploded. "Can't you see I'm working here? How would you like it if I just barged into your office and asked you to sign something. You'd be fuckin' pissed." I was walking into the building right behind him when that happened and heard every word and was dying to tell him people walk into my office every friggin' day. Get over yourself.

Re: Never meet your heroes...or at least the actors you like.

[identity profile] sriracha-grrl.livejournal.com 2010-03-25 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Wow.... and I just downgraded him to holier-than-thou with how he treated my cousin. He's just been upgraded to douche again.

I can kind of get where he's coming from. He's working, they interrupted him etc. etc. He could've been stressed about the scene. But at the end of the day having that eruption probably caused him to have more of shitty day than if he just bit the bullet and signed the friggin' paper or calmly said, "not today guys, I need to concentrate on this upcoming scene."

Re: Never meet your heroes...or at least the actors you like.

[identity profile] scriptamanet26.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's totally not what I've heard, but I've also never met him, so it's secondhand.

Re: Never meet your heroes...or at least the actors you like.

[identity profile] a-wittyusername.livejournal.com 2010-03-25 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Like I said above, i met him right after the premier of one of his worst movies ever. He could have just been in an awful mood after having to sit through two hours of him being in absolute nonsensical shit.

Re: Never meet your heroes...or at least the actors you like.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2010-03-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Edward James Olmos is a self-obsessed tool. I wish I didn't know that from first-hand experience.

Really? What happened?

Re: Never meet your heroes...or at least the actors you like.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's not like he threw a diva fit or anything, but I sat next to him for two hours while everything that came out of his mouth was hyperbole about how amazing his show was and how awesome he was on it. He clearly had a lot of pride in BSG and his work, but two hours of that made him sound self-important, self-serious, and not much fun, especially when fans who said anything other than a compliment about him or his work barely got acknowledgement. He wasn't interested in talking about anything but himself and how he got invited to the UN. (And I guess it's possible he's just really socially awkward around strangers and really misses doing that role, but all I can think about when I see Adama now is an ego the size of a space freighter. I still enjoy his work and I don't think he's a bad guy, but it was a let down that he came off like the sort of person I would never want to spend time with.)

Michael Hogan, however, was really really cool. Very gracious and friendly, and made small talk with a bunch of guys about the show and non-show stuff (apparently he's a big Bruce Lee fan). Also, he appeared to actually have a sense of humor and did not think BSG was the second coming.

Re: Never meet your heroes...or at least the actors you like.

[identity profile] ibroketuesday.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, that is a bummer. At least it's not something that makes him out to be a total raging douchebag like the Denzel Washington stories upthread, but an ego to that extent is pretty disappointing. Thank you for relating the story. ♥

Michael Hogan sounds awesome. :D
