Chile has more money to help themselves, right? That's how I've heard it.
Plus the worst damage has been the Tsunamis... I don't think they were as well-prepared for that.

Yup, we have until they saw the REAL damage of the earthquake as the media come back to that zone (We didn't knew the damage in Concepción until the TV news arrived there after 2 days of trying). So that's why Chile didn't wanted donations at first.

And yeah, the tsunami was worse, specially near the rural zones.

Chile might sound richer than Haiti but the country itself is still divided by those "who have the resources this" and those "who don't have the resources to overcome this", and Chile is formed mostly of the last group.

Situations shouldn't be measured by money, the historical records of earhquakes or infrastructure. Just because they were technically prepared for this doesn't make the deaths or the loss or the emotions experienced any lesser than the ones people from Haiti experienced, but for what it can be felt it's like the loss Chile experienced should not be taken in consideration as Haiti's one.

More than a donation related subject, it's the feeling given towards this: "Haiti is suffering, Chile was ready for this" and Chile did suffer, people died and experienced the same feelings as Haiti's people did.

Thankfully for Haiti their international debt has been forsaken, so they won't have to worry about monetary stuff anymore, which is something fantastic.

If I wasn't hurting for money right now I'd have donated by now (Mmm part time working AND having hours cut)

I apologize wholeheartedly, I didn't mean I thought you said Chile didn't need help, it's the feeling it has been given by the actions taken by the chilean government.

Many think that Chile is a first world country and it is not, it has debts and people struggling as well. The thing is that media was discrete with all the coverage, they didn't show bodies or the state of hospitals to make sure people didn't get scared for massive fear is what they feared mostly.

The data given by the media is a bit toned down or at least it feels that way. Argentina and Chile share part of the sismic problem and the nearby provinces of the neighbor country have the same anti-sismic infrastructure Chile has, even though with the replicas that took place after the big earthquake part of Argentina suffered infrastructure losses and they were prepared for it. There were even two casualities.

The quantity of deaths, the time they would take to make Chile run again, the material loss, all that data feels toned down and it could be because what the chilean government wanted the most was to prevent massive fear, riots, deaths and all what took place at Haiti, even they installed martial law in which if you didn't stop at first call, the policemen would kill you.

What I'm trying to say is, Chile's loss might not be felt like Haiti's loss because of the previous history, the infrastructure and such, but we don't know how really big it was because they handled things discretely to prevent every single worst case scenario that could take place, something that didn't happen at Haiti, which caused so much coverage by media.

I did notice how media coverage just... stopped after it happened.
But with what you said, it may have been for the best, if it prevented riots and more deaths.

I think the entire coverage lasted a couple of days, no more than 4 and suddenly everything got silent and they went onwards the change of presidents and Piñeira assuming the control.

Even the argentinean and peruvian coverage died as fast as theirs. So it's probably for the best, hopefully, ignorance is bliss or so they say.
