They did not choose to not ask for help per say. The thing with international help is that beggars can not be choosers so they took their time to make a list of things that they actually needed instead of being overloaded with things they didn't need at all.

The media, on the other hand, was discrete and toned down the information to keep the morale up and the riots and violent deaths down. In fact, I think it didn't last more than 4 days, including at the neighboring countries.

They strictly forbid to show images of dead people, only building, and even fired a man who announced a tsunami alert without the proper foundation because it caused innecesary fear.

That's mostly the difference with Haiti, they weren't able to handle things media wise properly and things got out of hand quickly. Chile, on the other hand, was ever so silent to prevent what happened at Haiti.

If Chile's damage was bigger than what they reported, it will not be known for media is dead silent about it.

All this is true, but it essentially boils down to the same thing. The secret maker wonders why the community for the Chilean earthquake didn't get as much attention. That is why.
